Free Knitting Pattern: Women's Pullover with Lace Stripe Detail in Schachenmayr SMC Select Juliette

This free downloadable knitting pattern (design reference 4102/10, Design 2014) guides knitters through the construction of a classic women's pullover sweater featuring decorative lace stripe panels. Published by Schachenmayr, this pattern is worked in the brand's own Schachenmayr select Juliette yarn, a 100% cotton chunky-weight yarn that gives the finished garment a soft, breathable drape — ideal for transitional seasons. The pullover is knitted in separate flat pieces — back, front, and two sleeves — which are then seamed together, making it an accessible construction method for knitters who are comfortable with basic shaping techniques.

Garment Overview

Women's Pullover with Lace Stripe Pattern

The design is a fitted women's pullover worked across five sizes, with stitch counts and shaping instructions presented for each size separated by hyphens throughout the pattern. The silhouette features set-in sleeves, a ribbed hem and cuff, and a shaped neckline on both the front and back pieces. The standout design detail is the lace stripe pattern (Lochmuster-Streifen) integrated into the main fabric, created using yarn-over increases paired with corresponding decreases to form an open, eyelet effect without adding or losing stitches overall.

Construction and Shaping

The back piece begins with a cast-on of 58, 66, 74, 82, or 86 stitches depending on size, worked on Milward needle size 5 for approximately 5 cm in the ribbed cuff pattern. The work then transitions to needle size 6 for the main body in the lace ground pattern. Armhole shaping begins at 30 cm height, with stitches cast off at each side in a stepped sequence to create the set-in sleeve curve. Shoulder shaping begins at heights ranging from 48 to 54 cm depending on size, with stitches cast off in stages on both sides. Remaining stitches are placed on hold for the back neckline.

The front piece is worked identically to the back until the neckline shaping, which begins earlier — between 35 and 41 cm height depending on size. Centre front stitches are placed on hold, and then stitches are decreased on each side in a gradual sequence: twice 2 stitches, four times 1 stitch in every second row, then twice 1 stitch in every fourth row, creating a gently rounded neckline. Shoulder shaping matches the back piece.

The sleeves are cast on with 30 or 34 stitches and begin with 4 cm of ribbing on needle size 5, before continuing in the main lace pattern on needle size 6. Sleeve increases are worked at both edges to shape the sleeve cap, with the frequency of increases varying by size — for example, size 32/34 and 36/38 work increases every 8th row, nine times each side.

Neckband Finishing

A 60 cm circular needle in size 5 is used to pick up stitches around the completed neckline and work the neckband in the round in the ribbed pattern, giving the collar a neat, professional finish consistent with the cuffs and hem.

Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting in rows — back, front, and sleeve pieces are all worked back and forth in rows before seaming
  • Lace patterning (Lochmuster) — yarn-over increases combined with two-stitch decreases to create eyelet stripe details; the pattern notes that where a full yarn-over and decrease pairing is not possible at shaping edges, the stitch should instead be worked as a plain knit stitch
  • Ribbing (Bündchenmuster) — a 2×2 rib (2 stitches knit, 2 stitches purl, alternating) used for all hems, cuffs, and the neckband
  • Set-in sleeve shaping — stepped cast-offs at armhole edges followed by single-stitch decreases in alternate rows
  • Shoulder shaping — worked with staged cast-offs on both sides to create a sloped shoulder line
  • Neckline shaping — both
