Product Description
Collaborating with amazing women is pretty much my favorite thing to do EVER, so when the Puddletown Knitting Guild suggested that my fiber bestie and I create a KAL project for their group, I squealed out loud. Being able to create a fun and airy summertime shawl project pairing Knitted Wit’s newest Fairy Floss with my favorite yarn ever, Victory Sock, was a dream come true.
The result is a top-down triangular shawl with simple mesh lace, because that’s my summertime jam. Made to showcase the textural play between lace-weight mohair and sock yarn in the same magical colorway. Big bonus: I’m wearing this to Yarn Prom!
Puddletown Shawl by Shannon Squire
What is Being Made
The Puddletown Shawl is a top-down triangular shawl designed as a lightweight, airy summer accessory. This knitted shawl showcases an elegant interplay between two contrasting yarn weights and textures, creating a sophisticated layering piece perfect for warm-weather wear.
Design and Construction
This shawl features a top-down triangular construction, a popular method that allows knitters to customize the finished size by simply continuing to knit until desired dimensions are reached. The design emphasizes simple mesh lace as its primary stitch pattern, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to explore lace techniques without overwhelming complexity. The lace pattern creates an open, breathable fabric that is particularly suited to summer wear.
Yarn and Materials
The Puddletown Shawl requires approximately 825 yards (754 meters) of yarn total, worked with two distinct yarns in the same colorway:
- Yarn A: Knitted Wit Fairy Floss (lace-weight mohair)
- Yarn B: Victory Sock yarn
The combination of lace-weight mohair with traditional sock yarn creates textural contrast and visual interest, allowing the colorway to shine while the different yarn weights add dimension to the finished piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level pattern employs mesh lace as its primary stitch technique. Mesh lace is created through strategic yarn overs and decreases that form an open, geometric pattern. The top-down triangular construction method requires knitters to understand increasing techniques to expand the shawl from the center point outward, combined with lace decreases to maintain pattern integrity as the piece grows.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Puddletown Shawl is appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace patterns and top-down shawl construction. The simple mesh lace design keeps the pattern accessible while still offering the satisfaction of working with delicate, open stitchwork.
