Product Description
The design for these socks evolved from my desire to add a little extra fun to self-striping yarn without getting in the way of the character of the yarn. The slipped-stitch colorwork patterning does that with a pattern that is simple and intuitive to knit once you understand how it works. While it was designed to be worked over four-row stripes, the patterning will work on any self-striping sock yarn that creates stripes at least three rows tall.
Beyond the stitch pattern, this is a good, solid, toe-up sock pattern that will teach or expand your sock skills, full of tips and tutorials on Kitchener stitch, afterthought heels, textured colorwork, and a bind-off that may be new to you — because we can always be proud of learning new skills!
Proud to Be Socks by Amy Snell, The Devious Knitter
Project Overview
The Proud to Be socks are a celebration sock design created by independent designer Amy Snell, The Devious Knitter. These socks were designed to honor self-expression, diversity, and the LGBTQ+ community, while also marking a personal milestone—the designer's first year as a full-time professional designer and knitting instructor. The design combines the designer's passion for color, rainbow aesthetics, and sock craftsmanship into a vibrant, meaningful knitting project.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of socks featuring colorful striped construction. The design celebrates rainbow colorways and self-striping yarn characteristics, making it an ideal project for knitters who want to create festive, colorful legwear with personal significance and visual impact.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Proud to Be socks employ slipped-stitch colorwork as the primary decorative technique. This method adds visual interest and complexity to the self-striping yarn without overwhelming or obscuring the natural color transitions of the yarn itself. The slipped-stitch colorwork patterning is designed to be straightforward and intuitive for knitters once they understand the fundamental mechanics of the technique.
Stitch Details
The pattern utilizes slipped-stitch colorwork stitches worked over four-row stripes. This repeating stripe structure creates a rhythmic, manageable pattern repeat that allows knitters to develop a comfortable working rhythm while maintaining visual interest throughout the sock construction.
Yarn and Materials
The Proud to Be socks are designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the appropriate thickness and drape for sock construction. The pattern was specifically designed around Vesper Sock Yarn's Rainbow Love colorway, a self-striping yarn that features rainbow color transitions. Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn sock knitting to complete this project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience who are ready to expand their skills with colorwork techniques. The slipped-stitch colorwork method, while simple once understood, requires knitters to be comfortable with basic sock construction and pattern reading.
Pattern Format
The Proud to Be socks pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access the instructions digitally and work at their own pace.
