What Is Being Made

The Propagation Shawl is a triangular knit shawl designed by Laura Chau, worked from one point to the opposite edge. This one-size shawl measures 82 inches (208 centimeters) along the top edge, 33 inches (84 centimeters) along the short edge, and 72 inches (183 centimeters) along the bottom edge, making it a generous, versatile garment suitable for layering or wrapping.

Design and Pattern Features

The shawl showcases a geometric diamond lace pattern that grows and expands with each repeat, creating visual movement and interest throughout the piece. The lace motif is intentionally highlighted through the use of simple, understated stitch work on the body of the shawl, allowing the delicate openwork to take center stage as the focal point of the design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques:

• Lace knitting: The geometric diamond lace pattern forms the primary design element and requires attention to yarn overs and decreases to create the openwork effect
• Stockinette stitch: Simple ridged stockinette stitch is used in sections between lace repeats, providing contrast and allowing the lace to stand out
• I-cord edges: The shawl features i-cord edging along its borders, creating a neat, finished appearance and adding structural definition to the triangular shape
• Chart-based construction: The pattern uses charted instructions, with Chart B repeated as desired to achieve the desired finished size

Yarn and Materials

The Propagation Shawl is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, with approximately 1005 yards (920 meters) of yarn required for the finished garment. The pattern is flexible and can be adapted to different yarn weights by adjusting needle size accordingly and repeating the lace chart as needed until reaching the desired dimensions or until yarn runs out. The yardage will vary depending on yarn weight changes.

The shawl shown in the pattern photography was knit using Malabrigo Arroyo, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn available in 335-yard (306-meter) skeins per 100 grams. Three skeins in colorway 058 Borrajas were used for the pictured version.

Knitting needles required include a US 3 / 3.25 millimeter circular needle measuring 24 inches (61 centimeters) or longer to accommodate the shawl's expanding width during construction.
