Proof Cardigan Jacket by Daniela Mühlbauer
What is Being Made
Proof is a knitted cardigan jacket designed by Daniela Mühlbauer as a downloadable PDF pattern. The design features a black and white colorway and is constructed as an oversized garment with positive ease. The pattern includes instructions for creating a coordinating hat called "Lottchen." This intermediate-level knitting project combines multiple yarn types and weights to achieve a sophisticated, layered aesthetic suitable for both structured and relaxed styling.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Proof cardigan employs several advanced knitting techniques characteristic of contemporary garment design. The pattern utilizes circular needles for seamless or nearly seamless construction, a method that reduces finishing work and creates clean, professional results. The designer has calculated the jacket circumference for two different gauges, allowing knitters flexibility based on their choice of yarn combinations and weights. This approach accommodates various yarn substitutions while maintaining garment proportions.
The cardigan features a button band closure requiring 5 to 9 buttons of your choice diameter, allowing customization of the finished look. Neckline and hem finishing are addressed through the use of a dedicated lightweight yarn, demonstrating attention to detail in garment construction. The pattern requires 8 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping throughout the knitting process.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided content, the intermediate difficulty rating and use of DK-weight yarn combined with lighter strands suggests the pattern likely incorporates standard stockinette stitch as a foundation, with potential textural elements created through yarn pairing. The gauge specification of 20 stitches by 22 rows over 10 centimeters provides the foundation for accurate sizing and fit.
Yarn and Materials
The Proof cardigan showcases a sophisticated multi-yarn approach. The main yarn is 100% wool from Manufattura Filati Pifferino Srl in colorway BCO/NERO (approximately 500 grams, with 120 meters per 50-gram ball, totaling approximately 1200 meters). This serves as the primary structural yarn for the jacket body.
The designer combines this with additional premium yarns for specific sections:
- Body sections: An 80% cashmere and 20% baby yak blend (leftover approximately 700 meters) adds luxury and softness to key areas
- Sleeves: Knitting for Olive black 100% wool (50 grams, 250 meters per ball) provides consistent fiber content and durability
- Neckline and hem finishing: Biches & Buches Le Petit Lambswool in dark grey (50 grams, 248 meters per ball) creates refined edges
Total yardage requirements vary by size and gauge: 1000 to 1600 meters (1100 to 1700 yards) depending on which gauge and yarn weight combination the knitter selects. This range accommodates six different size options within each gauge category.
Needles and Tools Required
The pattern requires circular needles in three sizes: 5mm (US 8), 4.5mm (US 7), and 4mm (US 6), allowing for gauge adjustments and different stitch techniques throughout the garment. Essential tools include 8 stitch markers for pattern tracking, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, and scissors. Buttons (5 to 9, depending on desired closure frequency) complete the notions list, with diameter left to the knitter's preference for customization.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Proof cardigan is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in garment construction. The use of circular needles, multiple yarn weights, and the requirement to work from detailed schematics and gauge calculations indicates this pattern requires comfort with reading complex instructions and managing multiple yarn strands simultaneously. The designer's inclusion of two gauge options adds flexibility but also requires knitters to make informed decisions about yarn selection and gauge swatching before beginning the project.
