Product Description

This is a pattern designed after a dress I refused to take off when I was little, my testers did an amazing job turning this into the different Disney princess dresses.

It is sized with 4 sizes, 12 - 18 mo, 18 - 24 mo, 2T/3T, 4T/5T.

Each size is reached by using a different sized hook.

The sizes over 18mo, will need three balls of cotton for the bottom skirt color. Four balls for the 4T/5T

Dress covers from party dress to strapless dress.

Garment Overview

Princess Ansleigh's Party Dress is a crocheted children's party dress designed for sizes 12 months through 5T. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a festive garment suitable for special occasions, featuring a multi-color construction and decorative button details.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a complete children's dress with a fitted waistband and a structured skirt. The design incorporates a sophisticated pleated construction technique that adds visual interest and dimension to the garment. The dress is finished with functional buttons, making it both decorative and practical for dressing young children.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Princess Ansleigh's Party Dress employs several intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its polished appearance:

  • Pleating: A specialized technique where stitches are worked into the front loop only, then the back loop only, creating structured folds in the fabric
  • Front Loop Only (FLO) and Back Loop Only (BLO) construction: These selective loop techniques allow the crocheter to manipulate fabric texture and create intentional design elements
  • Increases and decreases: Used throughout to shape the waistband and skirt sections for proper fit across the size range
  • Gauge checking: Critical for ensuring the dress fits properly, with specific attention to the waistband gauge

Crochet Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes a range of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to construct the dress:

  • Chain (CH): Foundation stitch used to establish the base of the garment
  • Slip Stitch (SL ST): Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
  • Single Crochet (SC): The shortest and tightest of the stitches used, providing structure and density
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC): A medium-height stitch offering balance between drape and structure
  • Double Crochet (DC): A taller stitch used extensively in the pleating technique and skirt construction
  • Half Treble Crochet (HTR): A taller stitch for creating more open, flowing sections
  • Treble Crochet (TR): The tallest stitch in this pattern, used to create lighter, more airy fabric sections
  • Increases and decreases: Variations of the above stitches (SC INC, SC DEC, HDC INC, HDC DEC, DC INC, DC DEC, HTR INC, HTR DEC, TR INC, TR DEC) allow for shaping throughout the garment

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The dress is constructed using cotton weight 4 yarn in four coordinating colors. The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Color A, 1 skein each of Color B and Color C, and 3 skeins of Color D, allowing for creative color combinations and a multi-hued finished garment.

Hooks: The pattern provides flexibility with multiple hook size options to achieve proper gauge. Crocheters may use Size G (4.25MM), Size H (5.0MM), Size I (5.5MM), or Size J (6.0MM) hooks, depending on their individual tension and the desired fabric drape.

Notions and Findings: The dress is finished with twelve and one-half inch buttons for closure and decoration. Additional tools include scissors, a metal large-eye needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a measuring tape for checking gauge and garment dimensions.

Intermediate Skill Level Considerations

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex techniques. The pleating method and the use of front loop only and back loop only stitching require careful attention and understanding of how stitch placement affects the final fabric. Proper gauge checking is essential before beginning the main garment to ensure the dress fits correctly across the size range from 12 months to 5T.
