Product Description

Wearing these fingerless gloves makes me feel like I'm a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, surreptitiously sipping a cognac cocktail from a teacup in a Roaring Twenties speakeasy. The gloves begin with a very feminine pleated cuff that is easy and elegant in appearance. The palm of the glove features an asymmetrical thumb gusset for a contoured fit. A yarn with tonal color adds interest to the stockinette stitch palm, but these gloves adapt well to most sock yarns, even the self-striping ones. Hello, Clara Bow!

What is Being Made

The Primrose Fingerless Gloves are a pair of elegant hand coverings designed to provide warmth while keeping fingers free for dexterity and tactile tasks. These gloves feature an open-finger construction with a fitted cuff that stretches to accommodate most ladies' hand sizes. The finished gloves measure approximately 7 inches in hand circumference when unstretched, with the design engineered to stretch comfortably for an adjustable fit.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to create a well-constructed garment:

  • Knitting in the round: The gloves are constructed using circular knitting methods with double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless construction and a professional finish.
  • Garter stitch in the round: The cuff begins with 6 rounds of garter stitch (3 ridges), creating a textured, elastic edge that sits comfortably on the wrist.
  • Stockinette stitch: The main body transitions to stockinette stitch for 6 rounds, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric.
  • Thumb gusset shaping: The pattern incorporates a thumb gusset using strategic increases and stitch markers to create a properly fitted thumb opening.
  • Decreasing: Decreases are worked using K2tog (knit two together) to shape and refine the glove structure, particularly visible in the decrease round that reduces stitches from the initial cast-on.
  • Stitch marker placement: Multiple stitch markers guide increases and shaping throughout the construction process.

Stitches Used

The Primrose Fingerless Gloves utilize a limited but effective stitch vocabulary:

  • Knit stitch (K): The foundational stitch used throughout the pattern.
  • Knit two together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the gloves and reduce stitch counts strategically.
  • Make one (M1): An increase technique used in the thumb gusset to add stitches where needed for proper fit.
  • Garter stitch: Created by knitting every round, producing horizontal ridges in the cuff.
  • Stockinette stitch: Achieved by knitting all rounds, creating the smooth fabric characteristic of the main glove body.

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for specific materials chosen for comfort, durability, and aesthetic appeal:

  • Yarn: Cascade Heritage Wave in Lava #507, a super fine weight yarn (3½ oz/100g skein with 437 yards per 400 meters). The fiber content is 75% merino wool blended with 25% nylon, providing softness, breathability, and added durability. One skein provides the 202 yards required to complete the gloves.
  • Needles: A set of five Size 1 (2.25 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns), which are appropriately sized for working with super fine weight yarn and creating the tight gauge necessary for a well-fitting garment.
  • Notions: Three stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping sections throughout the construction.

Pattern Structure and Sizing

The Primrose Fingerless Gloves are designed with versatility in mind. The pattern is engineered to stretch to fit most ladies' hands, making it a one-size-fits-most design. The cuff measures approximately 2 inches from the cast-on edge, providing adequate coverage at the wrist while remaining comfortable and non-restrictive. The pattern includes specific shaping rounds, such as the decrease round at round 17, which strategically reduces stitches to refine the fit and ensure proper drape.
