Product Description
This is a pattern for both an Estonian shawl, that measures 24 inches x 74 inches.
This very lacy scarf/shawl is composed of three distinct Estonian stitches that blend together in a gorgeous shawl. If you would like to try your hand at an “heirloom-to-be” Estonian lace weight shawl, this is the one to start with. It couldn’t be more beautiful, and gives you experience with several of the Estonian stitches.
If you have never done nupps before, there are two types of instructions contained within the pattern.
Both stitches are charted and written out line by line.
Skill Level: Intermediate - Intermediate + (assuming a basic knowledge of lace knitting).
The sample was knit with Helen's Lace (by Lorna's), but any lace weight yarn will work for this pattern.
Prandi Estonian Shawl by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
The Prandi Estonian Shawl is a summer wrap designed as a wearable art piece that showcases traditional Estonian knitting techniques. This intermediate-level knitting project combines three distinct Estonian stitches into a cohesive shawl design that transitions beautifully from the body to the finished edging.
Design and Construction Techniques
This shawl demonstrates authentic Estonian knitting methods adapted for Western knitters. The construction features multiple stitch patterns that blend seamlessly throughout the piece. A key technique used in finishing is the Kitchener stitch, which is applied to attach the second edging using the grafting method common in Western knitting practices, rather than the traditional Estonian method of sewing the edging on at the end of the work.
The shawl is worked in stockinette stitch as the primary gauge reference, though the pattern incorporates the three distinct Estonian stitches that create visual interest and texture throughout the design.
Stitches Used
- Three distinct Estonian stitch patterns (specific stitch names detailed in full pattern)
- Stockinette stitch (used as gauge reference)
- Yarn overs (yo's) for lace elements
- Kitchener stitch for edging attachment
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: 1050 to 1300 yards of heavy lace weight yarn. The yardage range allows flexibility based on individual gauge and desired finished dimensions.
Needles and Tools: US Size #5 needles (3.75mm) with a cable length of at least 24 inches to accommodate the shawl width comfortably. Additional materials include two stitch markers for pattern tracking and a darning needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 5.5 stitches per inch and 8½ rows per inch when wet blocked in stockinette stitch. While the pattern notes that gauge is not critically important to the overall aesthetic, variations in personal gauge will affect the final sizing and may require adjustments to yarn yardage requirements.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as Intermediate to Intermediate+, assuming knitters have solid foundational knowledge of basic knitting and purling techniques, as well as comfort with yarn overs (yo's). The Estonian stitch patterns and their integration throughout the design provide an engaging challenge for experienced knitters seeking to expand their technical repertoire.
