Product Description

"Prancing Horses" beanie has been created as a gift for making my dreams come true. Many, many years ago I dreamed of being able to ride a horse, but never had the courage to go for it. This year I decided, it's now or never! This hat has been made for my instructor, Nika, who is soo patient and lovely. It's also been made for my daughter, your daughter, your friend and loved one who just like me dreams of horses every day.

Prancing Horses Knit Hat by Justyna Lorkowska

What is Being Made

Prancing Horses is a downloadable knit hat pattern designed by Justyna Lorkowska. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat with a circumference of 54-56 cm (21-22 inches) and a length of approximately 23 cm (9.25 inches). The hat is worked in the round and features a classic brimmed construction with colorwork patterning.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project worked primarily in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles. The pattern incorporates several key techniques:

  • German Twisted Cast-On: The brim is created using the German Twisted Cast-On method, a technique that produces a secure and elastic edge ideal for hat construction
  • Fair-Isle Colorwork: The pattern features fair-isle color dominance techniques, which is a traditional method for working with two colors in knitting to create intricate patterns while maintaining even tension and fabric integrity
  • Seamless In-the-Round Construction: The hat is worked circularly from the brim upward, eliminating the need for seaming

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used in this pattern is:

  • 1x1 Rib (in the Rnd): Worked as *k1, p1* and repeated around. This ribbed stitch is used for the brim of the hat in the dominant color, providing stretch and a classic finished appearance

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The pattern calls for 1 skein each in 2 colors of Comfy DK by Martin's Lab. This yarn is composed of 100% superwash merino wool, offering durability and easy care. Each skein contains 225 meters (246 yards) per 100 grams. The pattern is shown in the colorways Wheat (main color) and Admiral (contrasting color).

Yarn Weight: DK weight yarn is used throughout this project, making it suitable for creating a fabric with good stitch definition for the colorwork pattern.

Needles: The pattern requires two needle sizes:

  • 3.5 mm/US #4 circular needle (at least 40 cm/16 inches long) or double-pointed needles
  • 4.00 mm/US #6 circular needle (at least 40 cm/16 inches long) and double-pointed needles, or two sizes smaller as appropriate to achieve gauge

The use of two needle sizes allows for gauge adjustment and creates the proper fabric density for both the ribbed brim and the patterned sections of the hat.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle colorwork and more complex stitch patterns. Familiarity with circular needle techniques and fair-isle methods is recommended.
