Product Description
Recently I had a friend undergoing chemotherapy and I needed to knit him something. His hands and feet were/are always cold so a sock was the perfect choice. The title is an homage to my friend whose last name is Power.
Details: I didn’t have his foot readily available for measuring so I made sure there was plenty of ribbing for ease of fit and sizing. It knits up quickly in a light worsted yarn knitted on a tight gauge. The princess sole means that with the purl side out the inside is smooth for the wearer. The only finishing is the afterthought heel.
Sizes: Womens, (Mens/Womens Wide, Mens Wide)
Flat measurements: 3.5 (3.75, 4) inches As these socks are knit from the toe up it is very easy to adjust width and length.
The gauge looks a little weird because it is measured with a non-standard gauge pattern. With the larger needles I knit 19 sts of 1x1 and 4 sts of 2x2 rib for 23 sts total. This gave me 3 inches unstretched.
Power Socks by Fatimah Hinds
What Is Being Made
Power Socks are a versatile knitted sock design created by independent designer Fatimah Hinds. These socks are available in multiple sizes to accommodate women's, men's/women's wide, and men's wide foot widths. The finished flat instep measurements range from 3.5 inches to 4 inches unstretched, providing options for different leg and foot dimensions. The ribbed construction ensures excellent stretch and comfort across various foot and leg widths.
Knitting Techniques Used
Power Socks are knit from the toe up, a construction method that offers significant practical advantages. Knitting toe-up allows crafters to easily adjust the sock to achieve proper foot width during the knitting process and makes it simple to monitor remaining yarn as you progress toward the cuff. The pattern features an afterthought heel, a technique that allows for flexible heel construction and modification options.
The sock employs 1x1 ribbing throughout much of the design, creating the characteristic stretch and flexibility that makes these socks suitable for varied foot shapes. Cable stitches are incorporated into the pattern, adding both visual interest and structural integrity to the finished garment.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The gauge swatch for Power Socks consists of 19 stitches of 1x1 ribbing combined with 4 stitches of 2x2 cable work, measured at 23 stitches by 25 rows equaling 3 inches by 3 inches. This combination of ribbed and cable stitches creates a fabric with excellent elasticity and visual texture. The ribbed nature of the sock construction is specifically noted as making the design suitable for many different foot and leg widths, with plenty of built-in stretch for comfortable wear.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Power Socks require approximately 300 yards of DK or light worsted weight yarn. The sample shown in the pattern was knit using 1 hank of Studio June Yarn Andrea Mae in DK/Light Worsted Weight (100% superwash merino; 300 yards per 130 grams) in the Coppery Brown colorway. Any comparable DK or light worsted weight yarn will work for this project.
Needles: The pattern calls for US 4/3.5mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) and US 5/3.75mm DPNs. Alternatively, crafters may substitute one long circular needle instead of DPNs, offering flexibility in needle preference and knitting style.
Additional Notions: A darning needle is required for finishing and weaving in ends.
Pattern Notes and Flexibility
The Power Socks pattern is designed with flexibility in mind. Instructions are provided for knitting on 3 double-pointed needles, but the pattern easily adapts to knitting on a single long circular needle, accommodating different knitter preferences. The designer recommends dividing your yarn into two equal balls by weight before beginning, which helps ensure you have sufficient yardage for both the foot and leg portions of the sock. The afterthought heel construction allows for customization and modification options beyond the standard pattern instructions.
