Product Description
Who doesn't love a bobbled pillow?
This bobbled pillow is crocheted corner-to-corner, in Suzette stitch. The back of the pillow is simple Suzette stitch. The front incorporates bobbles throughout, which creates the seemingly random bobble splash. The smaller bobbles—embroidered French knots—are added to the front of the pillow once crocheting is complete.
Use a variegated yarn to achieve the striped look, or choose a solid colour and let those bobbles really POP! You will also need a complementary-coloured yarn for the bobbles and border.
The two sides are seamed together using a crab stitch (with the option to use a smaller hook). This pillow cover is designed to fit a standard 14”×14” pillow insert.
(Photographs and step-by-step instructions are included for both the corner-to-corner Suzette stitch and the French knots)
Pop The Bobbly Pillow Cover
What Is Being Made
Pop The Bobbly is a crocheted bobble throw pillow cover designed by Alyssa George. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a decorative cushion cover measuring 14" × 14" (35.5cm × 35.5cm), sized to fit a standard pillow insert. The pillow cover features a textured, visually striking design with bobbles distributed across the front surface, creating what the pattern describes as a "seemingly random bobble splash." The back of the pillow is worked in a simpler stitch pattern, while the front showcases the dimensional bobble detailing that gives this project its distinctive appearance.
Techniques Used
This crochet pillow cover employs several key techniques to achieve its textured, dimensional look. The primary construction method is corner-to-corner crochet, a technique that builds the fabric diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner, creating a structured square shape. The main stitch pattern used throughout is Suzette stitch, which appears on both the front and back of the pillow cover, providing a consistent base texture.
Bobbles are incorporated into the front of the pillow cover in two ways. Larger bobbles are worked directly into the crochet fabric during the crocheting process, while smaller bobbles are added after the main crocheting is complete using embroidered French knots. This two-stage approach allows for precise placement and layering of texture. The two sides of the pillow cover are joined together using a crab stitch, a decorative seaming technique that creates a finished edge while adding visual interest to the seams.
Stitches Used
- Suzette stitch — the primary stitch pattern used for both the front and back panels
- Bobble stitches — worked into the fabric during crocheting to create larger textured elements on the front
- French knots — embroidered onto the finished front surface to add smaller bobble accents
- Crab stitch — used for seaming the two sides together and finishing the edges
Materials and Tools
This project uses worsted weight yarn (weight 4), which is a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating defined stitch definition and bobble texture. The pattern calls for two yarn colors:
- Main colour: Lion Brand Ice Cream Roving or equivalent worsted weight yarn in Bit of Honey — 1 skein (437 yards / 400 meters)
- Bobble and border colour: Loops & Threads Baby Bliss or equivalent worsted weight yarn in Enchanted White — 150 yards / 137 meters
The pattern recommends using a 5.5mm (US I/9) crochet hook as the primary hook size, with an optional 3.5mm hook available for working the crab stitch if a tighter seam is desired. The use of variegated yarn is suggested as an option to achieve a striped appearance, though solid-color yarn will allow the bobbles to stand out more prominently against the background.
Design Flexibility
The pattern offers creative flexibility in yarn selection. Crafters can choose to use variegated yarn to create a striped effect throughout the pillow cover, or select solid colors to allow the textured bobbles to become the focal point of the design. This adaptability makes the pattern suitable for various aesthetic preferences and yarn stash options.
