Product Description
This versatile lace cowl requires 300-325 yds (274-297 m) each of two colors. It begins with a provisional cast on and is knit in one piece in the round, with the main body being worked in a simple dropped stitch pattern. The edgings are worked perpendicularly to the body. No bind off is needed because the live stitches are consumed as the edging is knit on.
Both sides of the main stitch pattern are attractive and the edgings are completely reversible, so there is no particular right or wrong side or top or bottom edge.
This pattern is designed for a single-ply yarn with long, slow color transitions, such as Knit Picks Chroma-Fingering or Crystal Palace Yarns Mini Mochi. The subtle color blending is achieved by working alternate rows with two colors. Each edging is worked using only one of the colors.
A set of interchangeable circular needles is ideal for this project; the provisional cast on can be worked over an extra circular cable with end caps attached instead of waste yarn.
Charts and written instructions are provided. This pattern has been tech edited and test knit.
Polonaise Lace Cowl by Carla Cuadros
What is Being Made
The Polonaise Lace Cowl is a versatile, reversible lace cowl designed as a single-piece project worked in the round. This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a sophisticated accessory suitable for various styling options, with the unique characteristic that both sides of the finished cowl are equally attractive and can be worn as either the right or wrong side.
Construction Method and Techniques
This cowl is constructed using a distinctive two-stage knitting process. The project begins with a provisional cast on, which allows for a seamless connection later in the pattern. The main body is worked in one continuous piece in the round, eliminating the need for seaming. The edgings are worked perpendicularly to the body, meaning they are knit at right angles to the main fabric. This perpendicular construction eliminates the need for a traditional bind off, as the live stitches from the body are consumed directly as the edging is knit on, creating a finished edge without additional finishing steps.
The reversibility of this cowl is a key design feature. Because both sides of the main stitch pattern are equally attractive, there is no designated right or wrong side, top or bottom edge. This versatility makes the cowl adaptable to different wearing preferences and styling choices.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Polonaise Lace Cowl employs a simple dropped stitch pattern for the main body. The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:
- Knit stitches for basic fabric construction
- Purl stitches to create texture and pattern variation
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) for decreasing and creating lace openings
- Knit 3 together (k3tog) for additional decrease shaping
- Knit 2 together through the back loop (k2tog-wb) for directional decreases
- Slip stitches with yarn in back (s1wiyb) for edge definition
The pattern is presented in both chart format and written instructions, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method of following the pattern.
Color Work and Yarn Techniques
The Polonaise Lace Cowl features a sophisticated color work approach using Knit Picks Chroma-Fingering yarn, a single-ply yarn characterized by long, slow color transitions. The subtle color blending is achieved by working alternate rows with two colors, creating a gradual, harmonious color shift throughout the main body. Each edging is worked using only one of the two colors, providing visual definition between the body and the edgings while maintaining the overall design cohesion.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed for lace weight yarn, specifically recommending Knit Picks Chroma-Fingering. The single-ply construction of this yarn type allows for the delicate drape and light, airy fabric characteristic of lace cowls. The yarn's color properties are integral to the design, with the long color transitions creating the visual interest without requiring complex colorwork techniques.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Polonaise Lace Cowl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more sophisticated construction techniques. The perpendicular edging method and dropped stitch pattern require attention to detail and understanding of how stitches interact, making it an appropriate challenge for advancing knitters without being overly complex for experienced crafters.
