Product Description
Pleats and Thank You was inspired by my desire to add more 3D effects to my knitting. ‘Can I make this happen? Can I try a new element and make it work in a design?’ Those were the thoughts running through my head as I designed Pleats and Thank You and added the welts to the project.
One of my favorite parts of designing is making the yarn shine perfectly with my project. Pleats and Thank You is a great way to use variegated yarn and make a color pop as the pleats! Pleats and Thank You can also be a stash buster with different leftover colors for the pleats!

Pleats and Thank You Shawl by All Knit Up Designs
What is Being Made
Pleats and Thank You is a knitted shawl designed as a triangular wrap measuring 90 inches wide by 18 inches deep when blocked. This intermediate-level shawl project creates a sophisticated accessory suitable for various occasions and styling options.
Knitting Techniques Used
This shawl employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create its distinctive structure. The design features a welt section that forms the textural foundation of the piece. Increases are worked throughout using the knit front and back (KFB) technique to shape the triangular silhouette. The shawl incorporates color work with a main color and contrast color, allowing crafters to experiment with complementary or contrasting yarn combinations.
The pattern notes suggest optional texture variations, recommending that knitters can hold a mohair yarn with the contrast color in the welt section to add dimensional interest and play with different fiber textures within a single project.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch structure is built on garter stitch, which creates a reversible, textured fabric with visible horizontal bumps. Key stitches used throughout the pattern include:
- Knit (K) - the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P) - used in combination with knit stitches
- Knit front and back (KFB) - an increase technique that creates new stitches for shaping
- Knit two together (K2Tog) - a decrease technique for shaping
- Slip stitch (Sl) - used for edge definition and stitch manipulation
- Purlwise yarn in front (PWYIF) - a specialized technique for precise stitch placement
The gauge is established at 24 stitches and 24 garter bumps over 4 inches (10 cm) in blocked garter stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Yarn and Materials
Pleats and Thank You requires 860 yards (786 meters) of fingering weight yarn total, divided between a main color and contrast color. The yardage breakdown is 760 yards (695 meters) of main color and 100 yards (91 meters) of contrast color, allowing for flexible color experimentation.
The pattern suggests two specific yarn options. Craftily Dyed Yarn's Merino Nylon Sock is a blend of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon, offering 460 yards per 100 grams. Lost City Knits' Foothills Fingering is 100% Merino, providing 560 yards per 113 grams. Both are fingering weight yarns suitable for this project. The nylon content in the first option adds durability and elasticity, while the pure merino option offers softness and breathability.
Knitting needles required are US 4 (3.5mm) in a circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 cm) or longer to accommodate the expanding stitch count as the triangular shawl grows. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends after blocking.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this shawl is appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with color changes, manage increasing stitch counts, and follow more complex pattern instructions. The garter stitch base makes it forgiving for newer intermediate knitters, while the shaping and color work elements provide engaging challenges.
