Product Description
Arr! Shiver me timbers, raise the Jolly Roger and yo-ho-ho! It’s Pirate Captain Octopus, the cuddliest octopus in the seven seas. For this toy, some pieces are knitted in the round to minimise seaming. For the octopus and hat, work in the round using a circular needle and magic loop or knit on a set of DPNs if you prefer. The eye patch is worked flat (back and forth) on a pair of single pointed needles. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the octopus is knitted in acrylic DK yarns. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and a little seaming to finish. The octopus is 28cm tall (including hat with legs pointing downwards).
Pirate Captain Octopus Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Pirate Captain Octopus is a knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This cuddly octopus character features a pirate theme, complete with a knitted hat and eye patch, making it a whimsical stuffed toy suitable for children or as a decorative piece. The design combines playful storytelling with practical knitting construction, creating a finished toy that captures the charm of a swashbuckling sea creature.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs knitting in the round as the primary construction method to minimize seaming and create seamless pieces. The octopus body and hat are both worked circularly using either a circular needle with the magic loop technique or double pointed needles (DPNs), giving knitters flexibility in their preferred method. In contrast, the eye patch is worked flat using traditional back-and-forth knitting on single pointed needles, introducing variety in construction techniques within a single project.
The pattern utilizes the long tail cast on method for starting stitches, which is a foundational technique that creates a neat, elastic edge suitable for toy making. Finishing techniques include sewing through live stitches to gather and close openings, with instructions to cut yarn leaving at least a 30cm tail for secure fastening and weaving in.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate-level project. Key stitches include:
- Knit (k) – the basic stitch forming the primary fabric
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch used to shape the octopus body and create the three-dimensional form
Additional techniques referenced include bringing yarn to the front (byf) for stitch manipulation and various abbreviations supporting pattern reading, such as beginning (beg) and following (foll) instructions.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and is ideal for creating toys with good structure and durability. The pattern requires circular needles for in-the-round sections and double pointed needles as an alternative option, along with single pointed needles for the flat-worked eye patch. A darning needle is essential for finishing, used to weave in yarn ends and secure the gathered stitches that close the toy's openings.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have mastered basic knitting skills and are comfortable with techniques such as casting on, working in the round, and basic decreases. The combination of circular knitting, flat knitting, and finishing techniques makes it an engaging project for knitters ready to expand their skills beyond beginner patterns.
