Pip the Pohutukawa Fairy Crochet Doll
What is Being Made
Pip the Pohutukawa Fairy is an amigurumi-style crochet doll designed by Leanne Vickery. This finished doll measures 30 cm (12 inches) tall and features a fairy character with a crocheted body, dress, wings, and decorative elements inspired by the pohutukawa flower. The project creates a three-dimensional stuffed doll suitable for display, gifting, or as a decorative handmade craft piece.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental amigurumi construction methods. The doll is created using the single crochet stitch as the primary building technique, worked in continuous rounds to form the body, head, limbs, and accessories. The gauge is established at 6 single crochet stitches equaling 2.5 cm (1 inch), which ensures proper sizing and structure for the finished doll. Multiple hook sizes are utilized throughout the pattern—3.75 mm and 2.75 mm hooks for main components, and a 1.30 mm hook for fine detail work such as facial features. The pattern incorporates double crochet and double treble stitches for textural variation and shaping, particularly in the dress and floral elements.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – foundation and structural base
- Single crochet (sc) – primary stitch for amigurumi construction
- Double crochet (dc) – used for dress and flower components
- Double treble (dtr) – creates decorative layering and petal effects
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The project uses DK weight yarn (8 ply) as the primary material, with multiple colors creating distinct design elements. The main color for the doll's skin is pale pink, worked in 4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply yarn. The dress and flower color is fire red, using Lincraft DK yarn. Hair is created in chocolate brown using 4 Seasons Stallions 8 Ply yarn. Wings and leaf details are worked in apple green Lincraft DK yarn. Fine embroidery cottons in black, white, brown, and red provide facial features and embellishments.
Additional materials include polyester stuffing for creating a three-dimensional, squishy form, and 12 gauge aluminium florist wire (preferably white from Spotlight) used to create poseable wings and structural support. Florist tape secures the wire components. Fabric stiffener (brand Stiffy from Spotlight) is applied to set the shape of wings and decorative elements. Assembly requires a tapestry needle, yarn needle, wire cutters, pliers, sharp scissors, and hot glue for attaching accessories.
Skill Level and Complexity
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and amigurumi techniques. The project requires understanding of increasing and decreasing stitches to shape the doll's body, working in continuous rounds, and managing multiple yarn colors. The incorporation of wire elements and fabric stiffening adds a construction dimension beyond basic crochet, requiring careful handling of tools and assembly techniques.
