Product Description

Olivia refers to her pink heart baby hat as 'My heart'. She will reach up and touch the I-cord to make sure it's there. It's cute to see her smile when she reaches up and touches it.

♥ The pattern provides both a chart and written instructions. ♥ I designed a matching sweater for Olivia to complete her ensemble! You will find her Pink Heart Baby Sweater pattern in my profile.

Pink Heart Baby Hat by Joan Laws

What Is Being Made

The Pink Heart Baby Hat is a knitted infant hat designed by Joan Laws, available in three sizes to accommodate newborns through 12-month-old babies. The hat features a charming heart motif created using color work techniques, making it both a functional and decorative accessory for babies. The finished circumferences are 14 inches (35 centimeters) for newborn size, 16 inches (40 centimeters) for 3-6 month size, and 18 inches (45 centimeters) for 9-12 month size.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential techniques that build foundational skills. The pattern utilizes circular needle knitting worked in the round, which creates seamless fabric and is commonly used for hat construction. The design incorporates stranded colorwork (also called Fair Isle technique), where multiple yarn colors are carried across the fabric to create the heart pattern. Proper yarn management is critical in this technique—the pattern specifically instructs knitters to carry yarn loosely across the back of the work to prevent puckering and to cross yarns at color changes to prevent holes from forming in the fabric. The pattern also requires stitch distribution across two circular needles as the circumference decreases, a technique used when working small circumferences that would otherwise be too tight on a single needle.

Stitches Used

The Pink Heart Baby Hat is primarily constructed using stockinette stitch (St st), which is the most fundamental knit stitch pattern and creates a smooth, classic fabric. The stockinette stitch is worked in the round, meaning knitters knit every round rather than alternating knit and purl rows as would occur when working flat. The heart motif is created by introducing contrasting colors into the stockinette stitch base, with the pattern notes indicating that knitters will work with three different colors for several rounds during the heart pattern section.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Pink Heart Baby Hat pattern calls for Lion Brand Yarn Superwash Merino Cashmere, a luxury blend yarn composed of 72% Superwash Merino Wool, 15% Nylon, and 13% Cashmere. This fiber composition creates a soft, durable, and washable fabric ideal for baby garments. The yarn is worsted weight, a medium yarn weight that works at a moderate gauge and is versatile for various projects. The main color (mc) is #101 Blossom, requiring 1 skein for newborn and 3-6 month sizes and 2 skeins for the 9-12 month size. Contrast color 1 (cc1) is #098 Ivory and contrast color 2 (cc2) is #189 Wine, each requiring 1 skein regardless of size. Each skein contains 87 yards (80 meters).

The needle requirements include one US6 (4mm) 16-inch (40-centimeter) circular needle for the cast-on and initial rounds, and two US7 (4.5mm) 16-inch (40-centimeter) circular needles for the main body of the hat or sized to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working stockinette stitch in the round on the larger size needles. Additional materials include 5 stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction sections.
