Product Description
This beginner friendly pattern is a great use of cake yarns!
I used Yarn Bee's Sugarwheel but any worsted weight yarn should work.
The only thing you need to know is chain, slip stitch and single crochet.
I used the standard waist measurements but since all bodies are different be sure to take your own measurements to ensure you get the fit that you want.
Piece of Cake! Crochet Skirt by Brandi Isham
What Is Being Made
Piece of Cake! is a beginner-friendly crochet skirt pattern designed by Brandi Isham. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted, wearable skirt worked seamlessly from the top down. The skirt is available in four sizes to fit waist measurements of 27 inches (Small/Medium), 32 inches (Large), 37 inches (1x), and 42 inches (2x), making it accessible for a range of body types.
Construction and Techniques
The skirt is constructed using a top-down circular construction method, worked entirely in rounds. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric. The pattern begins with a foundation chain that is joined into a ring, then worked upward in continuous rounds. The designer notes that the skirt is designed to sit high at the smallest part of the waist, with sizing based on standard body measurements. Adjustments to the increase rounds can be made if needed for a customized fit.
The pattern offers flexibility for garment length. If a shorter miniskirt length is desired, using one less cake of yarn should achieve this effect, depending on the specific yarn type selected. Most cake yarns yield approximately 300 yards per cake, allowing crafters to customize their finished skirt length.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc): The primary stitch throughout the entire skirt. Single crochet creates a dense, stable fabric that drapes well and provides structure for a fitted garment.
- Chain (ch): Used for the foundation and turning chains at the beginning of each round.
- Join: Slip stitches are used to join rounds, creating seamless transitions between rows of work.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for a Size K/10 (6.5mm) crochet hook. The recommended yarn is Yarn Bee's Sugarwheel in Parisian Macaroon, a 100% acrylic self-striping cake yarn available in 7-ounce cakes containing 199 grams and 355 yards (325 meters) per cake. Crafters will need 3 cakes for Small/Medium, 3 cakes for Large, 4 cakes for 1x, and 4 cakes for 2x sizes. Alternatively, any worsted weight or aran weight self-striping cake yarn can be substituted, requiring a total yardage of 900 yards (Small/Medium), 1000 yards (Large), 1200 yards (1x), or 1400 yards (2x).
A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends upon completion. The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 single crochet stitches by 16 rows equals 4 inches, which should be checked before beginning to ensure proper fit.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for new crocheters or those new to garment construction. The use of a single stitch throughout and straightforward shaping makes it accessible while still producing a polished, wearable result.
