Picnic Table Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What is Being Made
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a miniature picnic table suitable for decorative display or dollhouse use. The design produces a realistic picnic table with a flat tabletop and four legs. The pattern offers flexibility in sizing depending on yarn weight selection, with options for a large picnic table measuring 10cm x 20cm (4" x 8") when made with 8 ply wool, or a medium picnic table measuring 8cm x 14.5cm (3" x 5.75") when made with 4 ply crochet cotton.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters with basic to moderate experience. The pattern uses joined construction methods, where pieces are crocheted separately and then stitched together using a sewing needle and thread. The design demonstrates how to create both flat surfaces (the tabletop) and dimensional legs through strategic stitch placement and shaping. The pattern includes techniques for fastening off yarn, joining new yarn at specific points, and increasing stitches at the end of rows to add dimension to the legs.
Stitches Used
The Picnic Table pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of amigurumi and small decorative object construction:
- Chain stitch (ch) - Used to create the foundation rows for both the tabletop and legs
- Half double crochet (hdc) - Creates the main fabric of the tabletop with a medium density
- Double crochet (dc) - Used for the leg construction to create taller stitches and add dimension
- Slip stitch (sl st) - Joins pieces together and secures stitches at the end of rows
- Single crochet (sc) - Listed in abbreviations for reference, part of standard crochet terminology
Materials and Tools
The pattern is designed to work with 4 ply crochet cotton as the primary yarn recommendation, though 8 ply wool is also suitable for creating a larger version. A 1.5mm crochet hook is specified for use with 4 ply cotton. The designer used brown yarn in their example, though any single color of cotton or wool yarn can be substituted based on personal preference. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, and a sewing needle with thread to stitch the completed pieces together into the final picnic table structure. This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format for convenient access and printing.
Pattern Structure
The pattern follows a modular construction approach, beginning with the tabletop piece created through chain stitches and half double crochet rows. Once the tabletop is complete, the four legs are joined at specific points along the bottom edges of the table and are worked using double crochet stitches. The pattern includes detailed instructions for joining yarn at precise locations and increasing stitches to shape the legs appropriately. Assembly is completed by stitching all pieces together with needle and thread, creating a sturdy finished piece.
