Product Description

This is my new Peter Rabbit complete this time with a bunch of heritage carrots and a template to make the red felt cape should you wish your Peter to be Flopsy, Mopsy or Cottontail.

Peter Rabbit is knitted flat on two needles with minimal 'bit to sew on afterwards' in other words you mostly join as you go.

You'll notice I've suggested using two yarns held together at once to obtain that subtle colour blending - that said I do also offer other options for yarn choices, in other words you can basically use whatever yarn to choose.

There is also a link in the pattern to a 'make up' video which I have made specifically for this pattern which you may find useful, especially if you've not knitted one of my patterns before.

Peter Rabbit and Carrots Knitted Toy

What is Being Made

Peter Rabbit and Carrots is a knitted toy design by Claire Garland, known professionally as Dot Pebbles. This intermediate-level knitting project creates an adorable stuffed rabbit figure standing approximately 30cm (12 inches) tall. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and is ideal for crafters seeking to produce a charming handmade toy with realistic proportions and fine detail work.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs an advanced technique of working with double strands of yarn held together throughout the entire project. This doubling method creates fabric with enhanced texture, depth, and structural integrity while allowing the designer to achieve specific visual effects through strategic color combinations. The pattern uses a systematic approach with lettered yarn combinations (indicated by double letters) to guide crafters through color changes and yarn pairings, ensuring consistent results across multiple projects.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the intermediate difficulty rating indicates the use of foundational knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques necessary for three-dimensional toy construction. The pattern requires careful attention to stitch counts and decreases to achieve the toy's defined proportions and realistic rabbit form.

Materials: Yarn Specifications

The Peter Rabbit pattern calls for a sophisticated blend of yarn weights and fiber types, all worked in double strands:

  • Yarn A: 1 x 50g ball of light beige 4 ply/fingering weight yarn (Drops Alpaca, shade 2020 Light Camel Mix)
  • Yarn B: 1 x 50g ball of light ochre or light rust mohair in lace weight yarn (Manos Del Uruguay Cabrito kid mohair, shade R9699 Butternut)
  • Yarn C: 1 x 50g ball of white 4 ply/fingering weight yarn (Drops Sky, shade 01 White)
  • Yarn D: Small amount (approximately 1/4 ball) of cream mohair in lace weight yarn (Drops Kid Silk, shade 29 Vanilla)
  • Yarn E: Small amount (approximately 1/8 ball) of off-white mohair in lace weight yarn (Drops Kid Silk, shade 01 Off-White)
  • Yarn F: Small amount (approximately 10 metres/11 yards) of pale pink mohair in lace weight yarn (Drops Kid Silk, shade 09 Light Lavender)

Materials: Needles

The pattern requires a pair of size 3.50mm (US 4) straight knitting needles. This needle size is appropriate for working with the combination of 4 ply and lace weight yarns held double, creating a fabric dense enough for a structured toy while maintaining the delicate qualities of the mohair fibers.

Yarn Weight Compatibility

This pattern is designed to work with multiple yarn weights including 3 ply, 4 ply, 6 ply, DK, lace, and sport weight options. The designer provides flexibility through an alternate yarn list on Page 3 of the pattern, allowing crafters to substitute yarns based on availability or personal preference while maintaining the intended finished appearance and size of the toy.
