Product Description
Perlenstulpen Zinne by riwollis
What is Being Made
Perlenstulpen Zinne are knitted mittens designed as wrist warmers or arm cuffs featuring integrated beadwork. These are worked horizontally (side to side), making them a versatile accessory project. The finished dimensions are approximately 18 cm in length and 17 cm in circumference, though these measurements are adjustable based on stitch count and bead pattern repeats.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The mittens are constructed using a horizontal knitting method, where the cast-on stitch count determines the final length of the piece, while the circumference is controlled by the number of bead pattern repeats worked. This approach allows for easy customization of sizing during the knitting process.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Perlenstulpen Zinne are worked entirely in garter stitch (kraus rechts) using twisted stitches (verschränkte Maschen) throughout all rows. The pattern is based on a 12-row repeat that incorporates beadwork. Stitches are worked from a stitch chart (Strickschrift), and the twisted stitch technique is maintained consistently to create the fabric structure. The pattern repeat system allows knitters to adjust the circumference by adding or removing complete pattern repeats as needed.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn: The original design uses Merino 160 by Fernerwolle (100% Merino superwash, 160 m/50g) in color 434. Alternative options include any 4-ply sock-weight yarn suitable for threading beads. The yarn weight category is sport weight, chosen for its compatibility with bead threading.
Beads: Rocailles crystal beads in silver (3.1 mm diameter) from Pracht (item 9271-084) are used throughout the design. These beads must be pre-threaded onto the yarn before knitting begins.
Needles and Tools: Knitting needles in sizes 2.0–3.0 mm are required. The original sample was knitted with 3.0 mm needles. Additional materials include a sewing needle for threading beads onto yarn, sewing thread for bead attachment, a waste yarn for the provisional cast-on method, and an embroidery needle for seaming the finished piece.
Gauge and Sizing
- 40 cast-on stitches = approximately 12 cm length
- 50 cast-on stitches = approximately 15 cm length
- 60 cast-on stitches = approximately 18 cm length
These gauge measurements provide a reference for adjusting the cast-on stitch count to achieve desired finished dimensions.
