Product Description
Pentala was inspired by water. The soft lapping of waves, the intricate patterns tiny streams make. The eternal, natural movement of water. Finland is the land of a thousand lakes and we have a coastline on the Baltic Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Water is a natural part of life here. And ever so inspiring.
You will need approx. 700 m / 766 yds of fingering weight yarn. The sample was knit using 2 skeins of The Woven Smooth Fine (100% merino; 400 m / 437 yds per 100g). An alternative yarn is suggested below.
Pentala Shawl by Lina Knits
What is Being Made
Pentala is a lightweight wrap-style shawl designed by Lina Knits and inspired by the natural beauty of water. This garment captures the essence of Finland's landscape, drawing inspiration from the soft movement of waves and the intricate patterns created by streams. The shawl is knit on the bias, which ensures that rows remain manageable in length throughout the project, making it an accessible intermediate-level knitting pattern despite its elegant appearance.
Design Inspiration and Characteristics
The shawl combines two distinct textural elements: relaxing garter stitch sections paired with delicate lace details. This interplay of solid and openwork creates visual interest while maintaining the lightweight quality suitable for a wrap. The bias construction gives the finished piece natural drape and movement, evoking the flowing nature of water that inspired the design. Pentala is described as fairly sized, offering substantial coverage while remaining breathable and elegant.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Bias knitting: The shawl is constructed on the bias, a technique that creates diagonal lines and ensures consistent row lengths throughout the project
- Garter stitch: Relaxing garter stitch sections form the foundation of the design, created by knitting every row
- Lace work: Delicate lace patterns are incorporated to add visual complexity and create openwork sections that enhance the lightweight quality
Stitches and Construction
The pattern employs a combination of basic knit stitches and lace techniques. The garter stitch provides a meditative, rhythmic knitting experience, while the lace sections require attention to yarn overs and decreases to create the intricate openwork patterns. This combination makes Pentala suitable for intermediate knitters who have experience with both stockinette and lace construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Yarn Weight: Fingering weight (4-ply) yarn is required for this project. The pattern calls for approximately 700 meters or 766 yards of yarn total.
Recommended Yarn: The Woven Smooth Fine, a 100% merino wool yarn, is the designer's choice. This yarn comes in skeins of 400 meters (437 yards) per 100 grams, meaning two skeins will provide the yardage needed for the complete shawl.
Needles: A 3.75 mm (US 5) circular needle or the appropriate size to obtain the specified gauge is required. Circular needles are used for this project, which is typical for bias-knit shawls as they accommodate the increasing stitch counts.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 30 rows over a measured swatch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the shawl.
Skill Level
Pentala is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, making it suitable for knitters who have progressed beyond basic projects and are comfortable working with lace techniques and bias construction. The manageable row lengths created by the bias knitting method help keep the project engaging without becoming overwhelming.
