Penguin Tea Cosy and Toy by Rian Anderson
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a charming penguin-themed tea cosy that doubles as a stuffed toy. The design accommodates standard 6 to 8-cup teapots, with dimensions measuring approximately 46 cm around the widest part and 24 cm in height. The tea cosy features a 9 cm spout opening and 10 cm handle opening to fit typical teapot proportions. The same pattern can also be worked as a standalone toy without the functional tea cosy elements, offering versatility for crafters who prefer a decorative plush penguin.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with basic experience. The construction relies on stocking stitch as the primary fabric structure, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface ideal for displaying the penguin's distinctive coloring. The pattern requires careful attention to tension and gauge to ensure proper sizing, as variations in stitch tension directly affect the final dimensions of the finished piece. Seaming techniques are necessary to join pieces together, and the toy version requires stuffing with dacron filling to achieve a three-dimensional form.
Stitches Used
Stocking stitch forms the foundation of this design, worked in rows to create the body and structural elements of the penguin. This fundamental stitch pattern is worked by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the characteristic smooth appearance on the front of the fabric. The stocking stitch base allows for straightforward colorwork integration, enabling the black, white, and yellow details that define the penguin's appearance.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for 8 ply/DK weight yarn worked with doubled strands to achieve the correct gauge and fabric weight. Specific yardage requirements include 100 grams of black yarn for the tea cosy version or 120 grams for the toy version, 20 grams of white yarn for contrast details, 5 grams of yellow yarn for accent features, and approximately 7 metres of orange yarn for additional embellishment.
Needles and notions include one pair of 5.5 mm (US 9) needles for the main fabric and one pair of 4 mm (US 6) needles for any ribbed or fitted sections. Additional supplies encompass dacron toy filling for stuffing the three-dimensional toy version, a tapestry needle for seaming seams and weaving in ends, a stitch holder for managing active stitches, and safety pins or large sewing pins for securing pieces during assembly.
Gauge and Tension Information
Achieving the correct tension is essential for this pattern's success. The required gauge is 15 stitches and 21 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch when working on 5.5 mm (US 9) needles with doubled 8 ply/DK yarn. Crafters should knit a tension swatch measuring 20 stitches by 25 rows and measure the central 10 cm square to verify accuracy. Fewer stitches than required indicate the need for smaller needles to prevent an oversized penguin, while excess stitches require larger needles to prevent a piece that is too small. This careful gauge checking ensures the tea cosy fits properly on the intended teapot.
