Product Description

I'm a zoo volunteer who loves hats. In the winter I like snuggly knits that keep me warm while greeting visitors, so I started knitting hats featuring our zoo’s amazing animals. This one has five large penguins marching in a circular parade. There are three penguin species (heads) to choose from.

The hat is a simple watch cap knit on a circular needle. You can knit it in one color, but I like to use two. The bottoms are variegated yarns, the tops a color within those yarns. I used Red Heart Super Saver for the samples, but similar worsted weights can also be used.

IMPORTANT: Embroidering the penguins assumes a knowledge of Duplicate Stitch, also called Swiss Darning. This is not a course on that technique, but the pattern does include tips and reminders.

The pattern has complete full page and full color penguin graphs, including three on the duplicate stitch paths I use for the penguin colors (white, black and orange).

Gift tags to print are also included.

What is Being Made

The Penguin Parade Hat is a knitted winter hat featuring a circular parade of five penguins marching around the crown. The design incorporates three penguin heads as focal design elements, making it an engaging and whimsical accessory perfect for cold-weather wear. This project is ideal for knitters seeking a statement piece with animal-themed colorwork.

Craft and Techniques

This is an advanced-level knitting project that combines multiple techniques to achieve its finished design. The hat construction begins with ribbed edging to create a snug, stretchy cuff that keeps the hat secure on the head. The main body is worked in the round, which is a fundamental technique for hat construction that creates a seamless, tubular fabric.

The most distinctive technique featured in this pattern is duplicate stitch, a method for adding colorwork to knitted fabric after the base knitting is complete. Rather than working multiple colors throughout the knitting process, duplicate stitch allows knitters to embroider over existing stitches using a tapestry needle, creating the appearance of knitted-in color changes. This technique is particularly useful for intricate designs like the penguin parade motif, as it simplifies the knitting process while achieving detailed, professional-looking results. The pattern includes dedicated duplicate stitch tips to guide knitters through proper technique and stitch placement.

Decreases are incorporated into the crown shaping to gradually reduce stitches and form the hat's fitted top. This shaping technique is essential for creating a hat that fits properly and maintains its structure.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing stitches for the cuff edging
  • Stockinette stitch for the main hat body
  • Decrease stitches for crown shaping
  • Duplicate stitch for the penguin parade colorwork design

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Penguin Parade Hat is designed to work with aran or worsted weight yarn, both of which are medium-weight yarns that knit up at a similar gauge. These yarn weights are ideal for creating warm, durable winter hats with good stitch definition that showcases the penguin colorwork. The pattern includes specific yarn requirements and gauge information to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions. Knitters will need knitting needles appropriate for their chosen yarn weight and a tapestry needle for working the duplicate stitch embellishments. Additional notions are listed in the pattern to complete the project.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the combination of techniques required. While the basic hat construction using ribbing, stockinette stitch, and decreases is foundational, the addition of the duplicate stitch colorwork technique and the need to follow charts for the penguin parade design elevates the skill level. Knitters should be comfortable with circular knitting and have experience with colorwork techniques before attempting this project.

Designer Background

The Penguin Parade Hat was designed by MaryAnn C. Davis, a zoo volunteer with a passion for knitting animal-themed hats. The designer's inspiration comes from working at a zoo during winter months, where warm, engaging hats serve both a practical purpose and create delightful interactions with visitors. This personal connection to the design makes the hat a meaningful project for knitters who appreciate animal-themed accessories and functional winter wear.
