Product Description
I began designing this beret for my boyfriend’s trendy, Australian sister. When knitting for someone in the land down under, pieces that hold their own in the heat are a must! This design uses fingering weight yarn and size 5 needles, creating a thin, lightweight fabric- perfect for warm weather. I adore swirls, and this design uses a twist stitch popular in Aran sweaters. By shifting the twist one stitch to the right each round, a glorious swirl design is created. This beret is not only a great one-skein project, but is the perfect accessory to any warm-weather outfit.
You will need:

Penelope Swirly Beret by Wendi Gratz
What is Being Made
The Penelope Swirly Beret is a lightweight, warm-weather knitted hat designed to fit most adult women with a head circumference of approximately 21-23 inches. This one-skein project creates a sophisticated beret featuring a distinctive swirl pattern that makes it an elegant accessory suitable for any season, though particularly ideal for warm climates.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs twist stitch, a technique traditionally popular in Aran sweater design. The defining feature of the Penelope Swirly Beret is the innovative use of a shifting twist stitch that moves one stitch to the right with each round, creating a glorious swirl design that develops organically throughout the hat. This technique-focused approach transforms a simple stitch manipulation into a visually striking textured pattern.
Stitches Used
- Twist stitch (shifted progressively to create the swirl effect)
- Stockinette stitch (used for gauge measurement and base fabric)
Materials Required
This downloadable PDF knitting pattern calls for 200 yards of fingering weight yarn (4-ply), making it an efficient one-skein project. The sample shown was knitted in Louet Gems in Caribbean Blue. Needles required include Size 5 double-pointed needles, Size 5 16-inch circular needles, and Size 2 16-inch circular needles. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for finishing and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats.
Gauge
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which creates the thin, lightweight fabric essential for warm-weather wear.
