Pembroke Wrap by Andrea Rangel

Project Overview

The Pembroke Wrap is an advanced-level knitted triangle shawl designed by Andrea Rangel. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated wrap suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging project with elegant construction techniques.

What Is Being Made

The Pembroke Wrap is a triangle shawl worked from the center top-down. This construction method begins at the apex of the triangle and expands outward, creating a dramatic triangular silhouette perfect for draping across shoulders or wearing as a versatile wrap. The finished dimensions span 46 inches (117 cm) in wingspan with a center-to-point measurement of 25 inches (63.5 cm), making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering.

Knitting Techniques

The Pembroke Wrap employs several advanced knitting techniques that contribute to its sophisticated appearance and construction:

  • Provisional Cast On: The pattern begins with a provisional cast on, a technique that allows stitches to be picked up later for seamless finishing or additional construction
  • Garter Tab: A garter stitch tab is worked at the beginning, providing a structured foundation for the shawl's top edge
  • Top-Down Construction: Working from the center point downward and outward creates natural shaping and allows for easy adjustments to final size
  • Leaf Lace Pattern: The primary stitch pattern features a leaf lace design that creates openwork texture throughout the wrap

Stitches and Abbreviations

The Pembroke Wrap utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with decorative lace techniques:

  • Knit (K): Worked on right-side rows and purled on wrong-side rows
  • Purl (P): Reverse stockinette stitch element
  • Yarn Over (yo): Creates the openwork characteristic of lace patterns
  • K2tog: Knit two stitches together for right-leaning decreases
  • SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches individually, then knitting them together
  • S2Kp (Centered Double Decrease): An advanced decrease technique that slips two stitches together as if to knit, knits one stitch, then passes the two slipped stitches over, decreasing two stitches while maintaining centered alignment

Materials and Gauge

The Pembroke Wrap requires 260 yards (240 meters) of super bulky weight yarn. The pattern is shown in Brown Sheep Burly Spun, a 100% wool yarn with 132 yards (121 meters) per 226-gram skein, in colorway BS115 Oatmeal, requiring 2 skeins for completion.

The recommended gauge is 9 stitches and 10 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when working the Leaf Lace Pattern. Knitters should note that needle size recommendations are guidelines only, and the appropriate needle size necessary to obtain the specified gauge should always be used.

Tools Required

  • US #13 (9.00 mm) knitting needles
  • N/9 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Waste yarn for provisional cast on
  • Place markers for tracking pattern repeats

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with lace techniques, centered decreases, and top-down shawl construction. The combination of provisional cast-on methods, complex lace patterning, and shaping decreases requires solid foundational knitting skills and pattern-reading ability.
