Peep Toe Slippers Felted Knit for Women
What is Being Made
These are cozy women's slippers designed by Monique Rae Designs, featuring a distinctive peep toe construction. The slippers are characterized by a high back for ankle support, low sides for comfort, a strap across the top of the foot, and an open toe design that just covers the toes. The pattern is available in six different sizes ranging from 5/6 through 10/11, with options for average, narrow, and wide sole widths to accommodate different foot shapes.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs the felting technique combined with knitting to create durable, finished slippers. Felting is a finishing process that transforms knitted fabric into a dense, matted material with excellent insulation and durability properties. The knitting construction begins with flat pieces that are later felted to achieve the final texture and structure. The pattern uses a row counter system to track progress, with varying row counts depending on the selected size, as the number of rows needed changes from 13-21 rows for the smallest size (5/6) up to 13-41 rows for the largest size (10/11).
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout this pattern is the knit stitch. The instructions indicate straightforward knit rows worked consecutively across multiple rows, making this an accessible intermediate-level project. The simplicity of using primarily knit stitches allows the crafter to focus on shaping and construction while the felting process adds texture and definition to the finished slippers.
Materials
- Yarn: 100% worsted wool in weight category (4), used doubled throughout the entire pattern for added warmth and durability. Yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 186-215 yards for size 5/6, 215-240 yards for size 6/7, 240-265 yards for size 7/8, 265-290 yards for size 8/9, 290-315 yards for size 9/10, and 315 yards for size 10/11. Total yardage amounts may vary slightly depending on individual knitting tension and the specific sole size selected.
- Needles: Appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn, with consideration for the doubled yarn construction
- Additional Tools: A row counter is recommended to track progress through the varying row counts for different sizes
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the primary stitch work consists of basic knit stitches, the intermediate classification reflects the shaping requirements, size variations, sole width options, and the felting finishing process that requires understanding of how felting transforms the knitted fabric.
