"Peek a Bow" Sweater Hand Knitting Pattern by Lauren Riker

What is Being Made

The "Peek a Bow" Sweater is a versatile hand-knitted design available in two length options: a long-sleeved version and an elbow-length version. This intermediate-level knitting project features decorative bows as a signature design element, with the long-sleeved sweater incorporating three bows. The pattern is offered in ten sizes, ranging from 32 inches to 50 inches in bust measurement, accommodating a wide range of fit preferences.

Techniques and Construction

This sweater is constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked primarily in the round for seamless construction. The pattern employs a two-needle system with different sizes to create distinct fabric textures and structure. The main body of the sweater is worked using larger needles in Stockinette Stitch, while ribbing at the cuffs and hem is worked on smaller needles to create elastic, fitted edges. The decorative bows are knitted separately and then incorporated into the design, with each bow requiring approximately 24 yards of yarn.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch - Forms the primary fabric of the sweater body, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
  • Ribbing - Used for the cuffs and hem to provide elasticity and a finished edge

Gauge and Tension

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 19 stitches and 27 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch using the larger needle. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements across all ten sizes.

Materials Required

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn is used throughout this project. The long-sleeved sweater with three bows requires between 880 and 1330 yards, depending on size selection. The elbow-length version uses approximately 85% of these yardage amounts. The sample sweaters shown in the pattern were knitted using Knit Picks "High Desert" yarn in the colorways Lupine and Dusk, with Dusk used for contrast bows on the Lupine sweater body.

Needles: Two circular needles are required for this project:

  • US 5 (3.75 mm) 29-inch circular needle for ribbing sections
  • US 7 (4.5 mm) 29-inch circular needle for the main body of the sweater and bow construction

Sizing Information

The pattern provides ten size options with bust measurements ranging from 32 inches (81 cm) to 50 inches (127 cm), ensuring accessibility for various body types and fit preferences. Corresponding yardage amounts are provided for each size to help crafters select the appropriate yarn quantity before beginning the project.
