Product Description
The Pebblestone Beanie is full of texture. This is an advanced beginner pattern. It works up very fast. Written in Child, Teen/Small Adult and Adult sizes. This pattern comes with a bonus cup cozy pattern.
This pattern has a special place in my heart. I designed a beanie first and then found out another desinger had one very similar. So I had to go back to the drawing board and am so happy with the results. This pattern has received great reviews from all that have purchased it.
This beanie is designed to be fitted (not slouchy). It looks pretty in a solid color or a yarn that ombres. It has been a very well received pattern that I am sure you will love to make.
Pebblestone Beanie by Gayle Holtkamp
What is Being Made
The Pebblestone Beanie is a crocheted hat designed by Gayle Holtkamp, available in three sizes to fit different head measurements: Adult (20"-23" circumference), Teen/Small (18"-21" circumference), and Adult Child (16"-19" circumference). This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished beanie with a height ranging from 6.5" to 8.75" depending on the selected size.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs several specialized crochet techniques to create the distinctive texture and structure of the Pebblestone Beanie. The foundation is built using foundation half double crochet (FHDC), which creates a stable base without requiring a separate chain foundation. The pattern incorporates herringbone half double crochet (H-HDC) stitches, a textured variation that produces a woven appearance. Additionally, the design utilizes half double crochet in the third loop (HDC3rdLoop) and single crochet in the third loop (SC3rdLoop) techniques, which create dimensional effects by working into alternate loop positions rather than the standard top loops of stitches.
Stitches Used
- Foundation Half Double Crochet (FHDC) - creates the initial band
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) - primary stitch throughout the pattern
- Herringbone Half Double Crochet (H-HDC) - produces textured pebblestone effect
- Half Double Crochet Third Loop (HDC3rdLoop) - adds dimensional detail
- Single Crochet (SC) - finishing and shaping
- Single Crochet Third Loop (SC3rdLoop) - textural variation
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) - joining rounds
- Chain (CH) - foundational technique
Materials and Specifications
This pattern requires a 5.5 mm (size I) crochet hook and worsted weight yarn (#4) in quantities of approximately 140-160 yards depending on the size selected. The pattern recommends checking gauge before beginning: 14 half double crochet stitches by 10 rows should measure 4 inches. A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends, and pom-poms are optional for embellishment at the crown.
Difficulty Level
Classified as Advanced Beginner, the Pebblestone Beanie is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore specialty stitches and techniques. The pattern's use of herringbone half double crochet and third-loop variations provides an intermediate challenge while remaining accessible to those progressing beyond basic single and double crochet projects.
