Pebbles Hat by Justyna Lorkowska

What is Being Made

The Pebbles Hat is a knitted beanie designed by Justyna Lorkowska for Lete's Knits. This is a one-size hat intended to fit head circumferences of 54-56 cm (21-22 inches), with a length from brim to top of approximately 25.5 cm (10.25 inches). The pattern is suitable for beginner-level knitters and is available as a downloadable PDF.

Craft and Primary Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary craft. The pattern incorporates specialized cast-on methods to create a polished, professional finish. Two distinct cast-on techniques are featured in this design:

  • German Twisted Cast-On – a technique that creates a neat, twisted edge
  • Tubular Cast-On – an advanced cast-on method that produces an invisible, seamless edge ideal for ribbed sections

These techniques elevate the hat beyond basic knitting and demonstrate intermediate-level finishing skills, making the Pebbles Hat an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their technical repertoire.

Stitches Used

The Pebbles Hat employs a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • 1x1 Rib (in the Rnd) – created by alternating knit and purl stitches (*k1, p1*, repeated around) to form the elastic ribbed sections
  • Cable Stitches – including:
    • 1/1 LC (Left Cable) – slip 1 stitch to cable needle, hold in front, knit 1, then knit 1 from cable needle
    • 2/2 LC (Left Cable) – slip 2 stitches to cable needle, hold in front, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
    • 2/2 RC (Right Cable) – slip 2 stitches to cable needle, hold in back, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle

The combination of ribbing and cable stitches creates texture and visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity needed for a fitted hat.

Materials and Yarn

The Pebbles Hat is worked in DK weight yarn. The pattern calls for 1 skein of West Wool Tandem, a premium blend composed of 90% Falkland merino and 10% texel. Each skein contains 230 meters (250 yards) per 100 grams. The sample shown in the pattern is worked in the colorway "Pebble".

Needles and Tools

Two needle sizes are required to achieve proper gauge and construction:

  • 4.00 mm (US #6) circular needle – at least 40 cm (16 inches) long, used for the main body of the hat, with matching double-pointed needles (dpns) for the crown shaping
  • 3.25 mm (US #3) circular needle – at least 40 cm (16 inches) long, or three needles in a size two sizes smaller than the gauge needles, used for ribbed sections

A cable needle is required for executing the cable stitches. Circular needles allow for knitting in the round, which creates a seamless construction ideal for hats.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is designed for personal use only and is protected under copyright by Lete's Knits (© 2020). The beginner-friendly difficulty rating makes it accessible to newer knitters, while the cable and specialty cast-on techniques provide opportunities for skill development. The generous yardage in a single skein of West Wool Tandem ensures sufficient material to complete the project with potential yarn remaining.
