Product Description
This was one of the first scarves that I made. I looooved the scarf that Nicky Epstein has on for the cover of her "Knitting on the Edge". I designed this scarf specifically to accompany my Aran knit sweater. They look stunning together. But the scarf does well, all on it's own, with any sweater or coat.
The pattern includes chart.
Error Alert 01/13/09: Thanks to ddl who pointed out a typo in the chart. The chart (Row 7) does have the C3B covering 4 stitches, which is wrong, wrong, wrong. Murphy's Law has struck again! It should be a C3B followed by a p,k,p,k,p, then a C3F.
Pawleys Island Aran Scarf by Dorene's Designs
Project Overview
The Pawleys Island Aran Scarf is an original knitting pattern designed by Dorene Giordano. This intermediate-level scarf project showcases traditional aran cable techniques in a finished accessory measuring approximately 6 inches wide by 60 inches long, excluding fringe. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF and is ideal for knitters looking to develop their cable work skills.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a classic aran scarf—a long, narrow accessory that combines decorative cable work with traditional aran stitch patterns. The scarf is designed to be worn as a versatile accessory and demonstrates the textural depth that aran knitting techniques can achieve. The finished dimensions of approximately 6" x 60" make this a substantial scarf suitable for layering or draping.
Yarn and Materials
The Pawleys Island Aran Scarf is worked using Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran yarn, a premium blend consisting of 85% wool, 10% silk, and 5% cashmere. This luxurious fiber composition provides both warmth and drape, with the silk and cashmere adding softness and subtle sheen to the finished piece. The pattern requires 5 skeins of yarn, with each skein containing 93 yards (85 meters) at 50 grams. Knitters should use US 8 needles to work this project. Additional notions include a cable needle (if needed), stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate pattern focuses on cable knitting techniques, which are the signature element of aran sweater and accessory design. The pattern employs several cable variations and twisted stitches to create dimensional texture throughout the scarf.
- Cable Stitches: The pattern includes multiple cable crosses worked at different scales. C5B (cable 5 back) involves slipping 3 stitches to a cable needle, holding it to the back, knitting 2 stitches, then knitting the stitches from the cable needle. C3B (cable 3 back) uses a single stitch on the cable needle with 2 knit stitches. C3F (cable 3 front) reverses the direction by holding the cable needle to the front. C4B and C4F variations work with 2 stitches on the cable needle and 2 knit stitches, creating wider cables.
- Twisted Stitches: KBL (knit through the back loop) and PBL (purl through the back loop) create subtle texture and twisted stitch effects that add visual interest between cable sections.
- Twisted Cable Crosses: T3F (twist 3 front) combines cable techniques with purl stitches, slipping 2 stitches to the cable needle, purling 1 stitch, then knitting from the cable needle. T3B (twist 3 back) reverses this direction, creating asymmetrical cable elements.
- Basic Stitches: The pattern uses fundamental knit and purl stitches to create the background fabric and definition between cable motifs.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern achieves a gauge of 24 stitches and 20 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in cable stitch. While the designer notes that gauge is not overly critical for this scarf project, achieving consistent tension will help ensure the cables work up evenly and the finished dimensions are accurate. The scarf is completed with fringe, adding a traditional finishing touch to the aran design.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and have some experience with cable work. The combination of multiple cable variations and twisted stitches provides an excellent opportunity to expand cable technique skills while creating a wearable finished object.
