Pas de Deux Crochet Shawl by MADuNaier
What is Being Made
Pas de Deux is an advanced-level crochet shawl designed by MADuNaier. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a elegant wrap-style shawl with finished dimensions of 21 inches deep and 48 inches across the shoulders, making it an ideal garment for draping across the shoulders and back.
Yarn and Materials
The shawl requires 950 yards of Fingering or Sock weight yarn in Lilac and Dark Purple colorways. Crafters will need a size G (4.00mm) crochet hook and a yarn sewing needle for finishing. Optional embellishments include 3 yards of 3/8-inch ribbon and rosettes for trim, along with thread and a sewing needle for attaching decorative elements.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 2 pattern repeats equaling 4 inches. This consistent gauge is essential for achieving the finished dimensions and ensuring proper drape and fit across the shoulders.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
Pas de Deux utilizes fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques appropriate for advanced crafters. The pattern employs the following stitches and techniques:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – a basic stitch for creating tight, structured fabric
- Double crochet (dc) – used to build height and create the shawl's main fabric
- Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) – a decrease technique worked by completing two double crochet stitches and merging them into one, created by working (yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) twice, then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops remaining on the hook
- Slip stitch (sl-st) – used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Chain spaces (ch-sp) – openwork elements created by chains that form decorative gaps in the fabric
- Turning chains (tch) – chains made at the start of previous rows to establish height for subsequent rows
Pattern Structure and Design
The Pas de Deux pattern is organized with clear step-by-step instructions designed to guide crafters through both the ground (main body) and edge (border) sections of the shawl. The designer, MADuNaier, has structured the pattern to be danceable—meaning the repeating sequences flow naturally and are easy to follow once established. The pattern includes detailed abbreviations and instructions to ensure crafters understand each element before beginning.
Optional Finishing Details
While the basic crochet shawl can be completed with just yarn and hook, the pattern offers optional embellishment suggestions. Crafters may choose to add decorative ribbon and rosettes to enhance the finished piece, creating a more ornate, finished look suitable for special occasions or display on platforms like Ravelry.
