Product Description
The clover and tiered-leaf motifs of this large lacy shawl are meant to evoke the meadow and Party Tree where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins celebrate their shared birthday in the first chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.
The pattern is currently charted only; written instructions will be added at a later date. All lace patterning is done on the right (public) side of the fabric only; all wrong-side rows are purled resting rows.
The Party Tree Shawl -- a larger laceweight sibling to my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/silvertree-shawl>Silvertree Shawl -- features right-side-only patterning, elongated diamond-shaped sections containing a clover motif, and a more elaborate edging.
Note: This pattern has not yet been test-knitted by anyone other than the designer.

Party Tree Shawl by Erin McKenna Halsey
Project Overview
The Party Tree Shawl is a large, lacy knitted shawl inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The design features clover and tiered-leaf motifs meant to evoke the meadow and the Party Tree where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins celebrate their shared birthday in the first chapter of the novel. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished shawl measuring 35 inches tall by 72 inches wide when blocked.
What Is Being Made
This is a large, lacy triangular or crescent-shaped shawl designed as a wearable accessory. The shawl showcases decorative stitch patterns that create an open, airy fabric typical of lace knitting. The finished dimensions make it substantial enough to drape elegantly across the shoulders or wear as a wrap.
Techniques Used
The Party Tree Shawl employs charted lace knitting techniques, a fundamental approach in advanced knitting projects. The pattern uses right-side-only charts, meaning knitters follow written instructions or charts for public-facing rows while working wrong-side rows in a consistent manner. The shawl incorporates edge stitches—knitting the first two and last two stitches on every row to create a neat selvage—and a center stitch that is knitted on right-side rows and purled on wrong-side rows for structural definition.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The design features stockinette stitch as the base fabric, with lace motifs created through strategic yarn overs and decreases. The clover and tiered-leaf stitch patterns form the primary decorative elements, creating an open, botanical aesthetic. Stitch markers are used throughout the project to help knitters track pattern repeats and maintain accuracy across the width of the shawl.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: 700 yards of laceweight yarn (674 yards were used in the pictured sample). The example shown uses Good for Ewe Mirrorball in the "Rain Dance" colorway, which is composed of 95% Merino and 5% Metallic fiber, providing both softness and subtle sparkle.
- Needle: US 5 / 3.75mm circular needle, 32 to 36 inches in length, recommended for working the shawl's width comfortably.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern calls for a gauge of 24 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches by 4 inches in stockinette stitch when measured unblocked. The pattern notes that exact gauge is not crucial for this project; however, significant variations in gauge will affect the shawl's final measurements. This flexibility allows knitters some freedom in yarn and needle selection while still achieving a recognizable finished size.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle charted lace patterns. Familiarity with yarn overs, decreases, stitch markers, and reading knitting charts is beneficial for successful completion.
