Pancake Bunny from Wreck-it Ralph Knitted Toy

What Is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly knitted toy pattern designed by Andrew Lucas, creating a small stuffed bunny character inspired by Wreck-it Ralph. The finished toy measures approximately 15 centimeters in height, making it an ideal size for a decorative plush or child's toy. The design captures a cute, simplified bunny form with distinct body and head sections that are knitted separately and assembled.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern is suitable for beginners, making it an accessible introduction to toy making through knitting. The toy is constructed in sections—body and head—which are knitted flat and then assembled together. The construction technique involves casting on stitches, increasing to create shaping, working in rows, and then decreasing to form the tapered sections that give the bunny its characteristic shape.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

  • Stocking stitch (st st) – The primary stitch used throughout most of the garment, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to form a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side
  • Garter stitch (gs) – A textured stitch created by knitting every row, though this appears to be referenced in the abbreviations for general knowledge
  • Increases (inc) – Used to expand the stitch count, particularly in the initial row where stitches are increased in every stitch to double the cast-on number, and again when shaping the head
  • Decreases (dec and k2tog) – Knit two together decreases are used to reduce stitch counts and shape the shoulders and head, creating the tapered bunny form
  • Bind and tie (B and T) – A finishing technique where yarn ends are threaded on a tapestry needle and passed through remaining stitches, then drawn up and tied off to close sections

Materials Required

The pattern calls for 3.25mm knitting needles as the primary tool. Yarn is worked in double knitting (DK) weight wool in multiple colors: white for the main body, pink, green, beige, dark brown, and black for details and features. Only small oddments of each color are needed, making this an excellent stash-busting project. Polyester stuffing is required to fill the completed toy sections, and a tapestry needle is used for finishing and assembly work.

Pattern Structure

The body section begins with casting on 25 stitches in white wool, then increases in every stitch on the first row to create 50 stitches. Stocking stitch is worked for 21 rows to establish the main body length. The shoulders are shaped by knitting two stitches together across the row, reducing to 25 stitches. The head section then increases stitches to 37 for expanded width, works 17 rows in stocking stitch, and is progressively decreased back down to 13 stitches before breaking off the yarn and binding off using the bind and tie method.
