Product Description

This shawl pattern was directly inspired by the legend of Paikea (formerly named Kahutiaterangi), the demi-god who rode a whale to Aotearoa - ancestor to the Ngati Porou tribe, living on the east coast of the Northern Island.

As a descendant of Paikea and as part of the Ngati Porou iwi, I created this shawl in honor of the Whale Rider legend and as a contribution to the Maori arts.

As you work through this top-down crescent shawl, experience the journey of the Whale Rider. Can you see the body of a whale swimming through the blue seas of the Pacific?

Like the great whale itself skillfully navigating the waters, fly through the first section of simple eyelet garter stitch with ease before reaching the crystal blue waters of the shore. The seafoam stitch may look intimidating, but in practice, it’s very easy to do.

Where do you come from? What is your people’s origin story?

Design Overview

The Paikea Shawl is a top-down crescent shawl inspired by the Māori legend of Paikea, the ancestor who arrived on the back of a whale. This knitted accessory combines cultural storytelling with contemporary shawl construction, creating a garment that is both meaningful and wearable.

What Is Being Made

This is a crescent-shaped shawl worked from the top down. The crescent silhouette is a classic shawl shape that drapes elegantly around the shoulders, providing warmth and style. The finished shawl uses a combination of three coordinating yarn colors to create visual interest and depth in the design.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Paikea Shawl employs yarn overs as a primary design element. Yarn overs create decorative holes and lacy textures throughout the fabric, which is a hallmark of shawl knitting. This technique involves wrapping yarn around the needle to create new stitches, and when combined with decreases, produces the characteristic openwork patterns found in lace shawls.

The shawl is constructed using a top-down method, meaning knitting begins at the top edge and progresses downward. This approach allows knitters to try on the shawl as it grows and adjust the final length to preference before binding off. A long circular needle is essential for accommodating the increasing number of stitches as the shawl expands.

Yarn and Materials

The Paikea Shawl is designed for fingering weight, single-ply yarn. Single-ply yarns are delicate and create a refined fabric with a subtle halo effect, making them ideal for lace and shawl projects. However, single-ply yarns are prone to pilling, so careful handling is recommended.

The recommended yarn is Skudderia Fine Yarns Merino Single, which is 100% Merino Superwash at 400 yards per 100 grams. Three skeins are required in total:

  • Main Color (MC): 370–480 yards (340–440 meters)
  • Contrast Color 1 (C1): 110–150 yards (100–137 meters)
  • Contrast Color 2 (C2): 70–95 yards (64–87 meters)

The sample uses Wolf for the main color, Ozeanien for the first contrast, and Mint for the second contrast.

Needles and Gauge

Knitters will need a US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, 32 inches (80 cm) long, or the size required to obtain the pattern's specified gauge. A long circular needle is essential because the shawl grows significantly from the top down, and a shorter needle would not accommodate the expanding stitch count comfortably.

Skill Level

The Paikea Shawl is rated as a beginner-friendly knitting project. While it incorporates lace techniques through yarn overs, the construction is straightforward enough for knitters who are new to shawl knitting. Beginners should have basic knitting skills including casting on, knit and purl stitches, and yarn overs before starting this project.

Design Heritage

Named after the legendary Paikea from Māori mythology, this shawl carries cultural significance. The pattern draws inspiration from the story of Paikea, the ancestor who arrived as a leader of a new people, connecting the wearer to this important narrative through the act of creation.
