Product Description

Sometimes, you just need that bit of extra warmth on your hands, not on your arm. Thus, these mitts cover the wrists only. The decorative Tunisian cables are worked with Tunisian short row cords and cables, a technique I invented. The rest of the mitts is worked with slip stitch crochet, making them hug your hands. And of course, you can work a longer version.

I used Atelier Zitron Herbstwind in black and white.

Padma Mitts by Tanja Osswald

What is Being Made

Padma Mitts are decorative wrist-length crochet mittens designed to provide targeted hand warmth without extending up the arm. These fingerless mitts measure approximately 15 cm in length and 6 cm in width, though the pattern includes guidance for size adjustment to create longer versions. The design combines functional warmth with decorative cable detailing, making them suitable for both practical wear and aesthetic appeal.

Techniques Used

The Padma Mitts showcase advanced crochet techniques developed by designer Tanja Osswald. The primary decorative element features Tunisian short row cords and cables, an innovative technique invented by the designer specifically for this project. This specialized technique creates the distinctive cable texture that distinguishes these mitts from standard crochet designs.

The body of the mitts is constructed using slip stitch crochet, a technique that creates a dense, fitted fabric that hugs the hands closely. This combination of techniques—decorative Tunisian cables paired with slip stitch construction—allows the mitts to balance visual interest with a snug, functional fit.

Stitches Used

  • Tunisian short row cords and cables (decorative sections)
  • Slip stitch crochet (main body construction)

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for Zitron Herbstwind yarn, a premium fiber composed of 100% Merino extrafine wool with a yardage of 165 meters per 50 grams. The recommended yarn weight is sport weight, suitable for creating delicate, fitted garments. The sample mitts shown in the pattern use two colors: white and black, requiring approximately one skein of each color.

For construction, a 4 mm crochet hook (US size G) is required. The pattern recommends planning extra yardage beyond the approximately 10 grams of white and 25 grams of black used in the model, as individual crochet tension varies among crafters.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as advanced, reflecting the specialized Tunisian short row cable technique and the precision required to execute this innovative stitch method successfully. Crafters should have solid foundational crochet skills before attempting this project.
