Product Description
Skill Level: Easy
I've had many requests for a smaller version of my popular Owl Basket, so I have made one to compliment the original.
It's still has a generous circumference of 25" to hold many things such as yarn or washcloths. Made by holding two strands of super bulky yarn together, this basket works up in just a couple of nights (one if you are really ambitious). It is sturdy and can stand up on its own, yet can collapse flat when not needed.
Also available as part of an ebook on Kindle (with the original owl basket.)
Owl Basket Two Crochet Container
Project Overview
Owl Basket Two is a beginner-friendly crochet container designed by Deja Joy of Knit and Crochet Ever After. This decorative basket project creates a functional storage solution with finished measurements of 25 inches in circumference and 5 inches in height, making it ideal for organizing yarn, craft supplies, or household items.
Craft Technique and Construction Method
This project uses the crochet technique, a fiber arts method that creates fabric using a single hook to form interlocking loops. The Owl Basket Two employs a circular construction method, beginning with a magic adjustable loop and working in continuous rounds to build the basket structure from the bottom up. This approach creates a seamless, dimensional container perfect for beginners learning foundational crochet skills.
Stitches and Special Techniques Used
The pattern incorporates several crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch used throughout the basket construction, providing a balanced fabric weight and height
- Extended Treble Crochet: Created by yarning over twice, inserting the hook into the next stitch, pulling up a loop, then working through loops on the hook three times, adding decorative height and texture
- Double Treble Crochet: Formed by yarning over three times and working through loops four times, creating an even taller stitch for dimensional effects
- Picot: A decorative finishing technique made by chaining three stitches and slip stitching into the first chain made, creating small loops along edges
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Owl Basket Two is worked with super bulky weight yarn (category 6), which creates a quick, satisfying project with visible stitch definition. The pattern calls for 240 yards of Lion Brand Hometown USA in Houston Cream (color 098), equivalent to approximately three skeins at 142 grams or 81 yards per skein. Crafters may substitute any super bulky yarn of similar weight and yardage for customization options.
Tools and Gauge
Construction requires an 8mm crochet hook (US size L) and a yarn or tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The gauge is established at 2 inches equaling 4.5 half double crochets and 3.5 rows, ensuring proper finished dimensions when the pattern is followed with the specified yarn and hook size.
Skill Level and Accessibility
Rated as an easy, beginner-level project, Owl Basket Two is designed for crocheters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, straightforward make. The pattern includes special instructions and recommends reading through the entire pattern before beginning, a best practice that helps crafters understand the construction sequence and anticipate any techniques they may need to review.
