Product Description
Great for Mardi Gras, your favorite New Orleans sports team, or use pastels for French country decor / Shabby Chic!
This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.
Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.
You will need at least 2 colors of yarn - one for the background and one for the Fleur-de-lis. To do the sample image, just change out the background color for each third of the square.
This is a great way to use up scraps! For projects using 2 colors, (one for the background & one for the featured design), you will need approximately 2 oz of each color for a worsted or aran (wt 4) type of yarn.
Pattern is in US crochet terms.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet Square - Fleur-de-lis by Cyndie Birdsong
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a decorative square featuring a fleur-de-lis design using the overlay mosaic crochet technique. Designed by Cyndie Birdsong in May 2021, this intermediate-level project is versatile enough for blankets, throws, cushions, and decorative applications. The fleur-de-lis motif makes it particularly suitable for Mardi Gras celebrations, sports team projects, or general home décor.
Crochet Technique: Overlay Mosaic
Overlay mosaic crochet is a specialized technique that creates visually interesting shapes and dimensional texture within a single crochet project. This method allows crafters to build complex, multi-colored designs while working primarily with a single yarn color at a time, layering stitches to form the desired pattern. The technique involves reading graph charts to determine stitch placement and color changes, creating a mosaic-like appearance that resembles traditional mosaic artwork.
While overlay mosaic crochet produces striking visual results, reading the accompanying graph charts can initially seem challenging. This pattern is specifically designed to make the mosaic technique accessible to crocheters with intermediate experience, including those who may be newer to chart-based patterns. Success with this design benefits from familiarity with recognizing and executing standard crochet stitches.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is suitable for both aran and worsted weight yarns, providing flexibility in yarn selection and finished square dimensions. The choice between these weights allows crafters to customize their project based on desired size and drape. Appropriate crochet hooks should be selected according to the yarn weight chosen and the pattern's specific gauge requirements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, this square requires foundational crochet knowledge and comfort with stitch recognition. The overlay mosaic technique and graph chart reading add complexity beyond basic crochet projects, making this pattern ideal for crafters looking to expand their technical skills.
