Product Description
A boxy and airy sleeveless summer top, Otherside is knitted up quickly at a loose gauge. The stripes add just the right amount of interest to this shirt, making it a perfectly wearable addition to your everyday wardrobe.
Otherside is worked flat in one piece, starting at the front hem. Stitches are bound off in the middle of the row for the neckline and casted on again in the next row. Then the back is worked top-down.
The Shibui Linen yarn is amazingly breezy and crisp and is just the perfect choice for knitting up a modern summer top like Otherside. The linen also won’t curl in stockinette stitch after wet-blocking. If you like to work this tee in another blend, work both hems in ribbing or seed stitch to prevent the fabric from curling.
Skills needed are cast on, k, p, bind off, mattress stitch seaming.
A substitute yarn is shown below.
Otherside Sleeveless Summer Top by Melanie Berg
Garment Overview
Otherside is a boxy and airy sleeveless summer top designed by Melanie Berg as a modern, everyday wearable. The garment features horizontal stripes that add visual interest to the minimalist silhouette. Knitted at a loose gauge in 4-ply yarn, this top works up quickly and is ideal for warm weather wear. The design is available in eleven sizes ranging from 34" to 54" finished bust circumference.
Construction Method
Otherside is worked flat in one piece using a distinctive construction technique. The front is knitted first, starting at the hem. The neckline is created by binding off stitches in the middle of a row, then casting on new stitches in the following row to continue the pattern. The back is then worked top-down to meet the front section. Once both pieces are complete, the hems are folded to align, and both sides are seamed together to finish the garment.
Knitting Stitches and Techniques
- Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric structure throughout the garment
- Striping is incorporated into the design for visual texture and interest
- Binding off and casting on techniques are used to create the neckline opening mid-row
- Seaming joins the front and back sections at the side seams
- Blocking is performed after completion to achieve the finished gauge and dimensions
Yarn and Materials
Otherside is designed to be knitted with Shibui Knits Linen, a 100% linen yarn in 4-ply weight. Each 50-gram ball yields 246 yards (225 meters) of yarn. Linen fiber is chosen specifically for its breathable, crisp qualities that create an ideal fabric for a modern summer top. The pattern uses main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) yarns to create the striped effect.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The garment is worked at a loose gauge of 9 stitches and 15 rows over a 2" x 2" (5 cm x 5 cm) swatch in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. This gauge is essential for achieving the airy, breezy fabric characteristic of the finished garment.
Skill Level
Otherside is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the stockinette stitch foundation is accessible to many knitters, the construction method—particularly the mid-row bind-off and cast-on for the neckline and the flat, one-piece assembly—requires intermediate-level understanding of garment shaping and finishing techniques.
