What is Being Made
The Orkidea Shawl is a triangular shawl pattern designed by Meiju Kallio featuring a one-size design with finished measurements of 68 inches (170 cm) across the top edge and 58 inches (120 cm) in depth. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a beginner-friendly approach to shawl knitting, making it an excellent project for those new to lace work or looking for an accessible shawl design.
Design Approach and Construction
The Orkidea Shawl combines larger garter stitch sections with an easy lace stitch pattern, creating visual interest while maintaining accessibility for beginner knitters. The shawl is knitted from side to side, a construction method that allows for straightforward increases and a manageable workflow. The lace pattern used throughout is intentionally simple and easy to memorize, requiring minimal chart reference once the knitter becomes familiar with the repeat. Chart consultation may primarily be needed only at the beginning or end of rows, allowing for more intuitive knitting as the project progresses.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters:
- Garter Stitch: Created by knitting on both the right side and wrong side of the work, forming the larger textured sections that anchor the design
- Lace Stitch: An easy lace pattern that remains uncomplicated and memorizable
- Increases: Knit front and back loop (kfb) increases are used to shape the shawl
- Decreases: Knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) decreases are incorporated into the pattern
- Basic Stitches: Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation of all stitch work
Materials and Specifications
The Orkidea Shawl is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for both the garter stitch sections and lace elements. The recommended gauge is 19 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) measured in garter stitch over wet-blocked fabric. The pattern notes that exact gauge is not critical for this design, offering flexibility for yarn substitution while maintaining the intended finished size. Knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn are required, though specific needle size recommendations are referenced in the full pattern documentation.
