Product Description
Oregon Sky is a top down half circle shawlette, designed to make the most of one skein of Knitted Wit Fingering, plus the Rainbow Glow Up mini skein collection (6 mini skeins, 45 yards each). This easy knit features two simple lace patterns along with a garter stitch rainbow. The half-pi construction keeps your patterning simple, with only occasional changes in stitch count. Adding a second skein of fingering weight yarn increases the shawl size to 60" across by 30" deep.

What Is Being Made
Oregon Sky is a top-down half-circle shawlette designed as an intermediate-level knitting project. This garment is constructed using a half-pi construction method, which creates a semicircular shawl that drapes elegantly from the shoulders. The design is specifically engineered to showcase color work by combining a single main skein of fingering weight yarn with six coordinating mini skeins, making efficient use of yarn while creating a striking visual effect.
Construction and Design Features
The shawlette employs a top-down construction approach, meaning knitting begins at the neck or upper edge and progresses outward and downward. The half-pi construction method is particularly suited to this design because it maintains relatively simple patterning with only occasional changes in stitch count, making it accessible for intermediate knitters who may be newer to shawl construction. This geometric approach creates a balanced, wearable semicircular shape.
Stitch Techniques and Patterns
Oregon Sky features two distinct lace patterns combined with garter stitch sections. The garter stitch forms rainbow-colored horizontal stripes using the six mini skeins in sequence, creating a gradient effect. The two simple lace patterns provide textural interest and openwork characteristic of shawlette design. The combination of lace and garter stitch creates visual depth while remaining manageable for intermediate-level knitters.
Yarn Requirements and Materials
The project requires one 400-yard skein of fingering weight yarn as the main color, plus six 45-yard mini skeins in coordinating colors for the rainbow striping. The sample shown uses Knitted Wit Fingering in the colorway Oregon Sky (Superwash Merino, 4 oz/115g/400 yards) paired with Knitted Wit Gumball mini skeins (Superwash Merino, 0.42 oz/12g/45 yards each) in the Glow Up Rainbow collection colors: Fighting Iris (purple), Perry W. Inkle (blue), Astonish Mint (green), Solar Flair (yellow), Creamsicle (orange), and Pink Flavor (pink). For a larger finished shawl, knitters may purchase an additional skein of the main color yarn.
Needles and Gauge
Needles: US #5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, 32 inches in length.
Gauge: 13 stitches equals 2 inches in garter stitch, measured unblocked. The pattern notes that gauge is not critical to the project's success, though adjusting tension will affect the finished size and overall yarn requirements.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
Oregon Sky is worked in fingering weight yarn (4-ply), which creates delicate fabric suitable for a lightweight shawlette. The intermediate difficulty level makes this project appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore shawl construction and lace patterning without tackling advanced techniques.
