Product Description

I used the full package of Caron X Pantone, the last bit of the 5th colour is my pom, which could have been more dense.

I have a smaller sized head so it's a bit slouchy on me.

You can use the long tail cast on, I just prefer for double brims to use the provisional, it's easier to attach it for me.

The texture & decreases are both charted, the rest of the pattern is written.

Opposites Attract Beanie by Laura Dupuis

What Is Being Made

The Opposites Attract Beanie is a knitted hat pattern designed by Laura Dupuis of Loyal Badger Knits. This stash-busting beanie offers creative flexibility in construction and presentation, allowing knitters to customize the finished look based on personal preference and available yarn. The design features a reversible aesthetic with textured detailing that displays beautifully on either side.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for approximately 127 yards of bulky weight yarn (100g). The designer specifically recommends using one full package of Caron X Pantone yarn, though any bulky weight yarn from your stash works equally well. The generous yardage requirement and bulky weight classification make this an excellent project for using up leftover yarn in your collection.

Needles and Tools

Construction requires two sets of circular needles in different sizes to achieve proper gauge and shaping:

  • Size US 8/5mm circular needles, 16 inches (41cm) long
  • Size US 10/6mm circular needles, 16 inches (41cm) long

Additional supplies include a darning needle for finishing, one stitch marker for tracking rounds, scrap yarn for provisional cast on, and optionally a crochet hook to assist with the provisional cast on method. Scissors are needed for yarn cutting.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch on the larger needles in the round, with a gauge of 16 stitches by 20 rounds equaling 4 inches (10cm). Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Opposites Attract Beanie employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters:

  • Stockinette Stitch - The primary stitch used throughout the hat, creating the smooth V-pattern texture on one side and reverse stockinette bumps on the other
  • Reverse Stockinette - Featured as the textured heart design element that displays prominently regardless of which side faces outward
  • Circular Knitting - The hat is constructed in the round using 16-inch circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming
  • Provisional Cast On - A temporary cast on method using scrap yarn, allowing for a seamless join when the live stitches are grafted together at the completion
  • Gauge Adjustment - The pattern uses two different needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and shaping, with the smaller needles used for ribbing or fitted sections and larger needles for the body

Design Flexibility and Styling Options

The Opposites Attract Beanie offers knitters two distinct styling approaches. You can create a gradient effect by blending multiple colors of the Caron X Pantone yarn throughout the hat, or choose a color block style by using distinct color sections. The reversible nature of the design means the beanie can be worn with either the stockinette side or reverse stockinette side facing outward, with the heart texture remaining visually prominent in either orientation.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner to intermediate project, this beanie is accessible to knitters with basic circular knitting experience. The straightforward stitch patterns and manageable yardage make it an ideal project for those developing their skills in in-the-round construction and provisional cast on techniques.
