One Little Moment Cardigan by Kate Heppell
What is Being Made
One Little Moment is a cute, top-down cardigan designed to showcase special yarn. This intermediate-level knitting project features a simple yet striking yoke design that makes it an ideal canvas for displaying beautiful or unique yarns. The cardigan is worked from the top down, allowing for easy customization and fit adjustments as you knit.
Design and Construction
The garment is constructed using a top-down method, which means knitting begins at the neckline and progresses downward. The body is worked flat rather than in the round, giving you control over shaping and finishing. The yoke features a striking design that serves as the visual focal point of the piece, making it perfect for yarns with interesting color, texture, or sheen that deserve to be highlighted.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Top-down construction for ease of fitting and modification
- Yoke shaping to create the cardigan's distinctive silhouette
- Flat knitting for the body sections
- Circular needle techniques for seamless yoke work
Stitches and Abbreviations
This pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate skill level:
- k = knit stitch
- p = purl stitch
- St st = Stockinette stitch (the primary stitch used throughout the body)
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, specifically tested with Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend. This yarn is composed of 70% Merino wool with silk content, offering a luxurious blend that provides both warmth and subtle sheen. Each skein contains 135 meters per 50 grams, making it a yardage-efficient choice for this project.
The recommended gauge is 20 stitches by 30 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured in Stockinette stitch. Knitting is worked on 4mm (US size 6) circular needles, which are essential for the top-down yoke construction method used in this design.
