Once In A… Shawl by Mindy Wilkes
What Is Being Made
Once In A… is a crescent-shaped knitted shawl inspired by the concept of a blue moon—the uncommon occurrence of a second full moon within a single month. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a sophisticated accessory featuring a delicate lace edge embellished with beads for subtle sparkle and visual interest.
Finished Dimensions
The completed shawl measures 48 inches (122 cm) wide by 18 inches (46 cm) deep, making it a generous triangular or crescent-shaped wrap suitable for draping across the shoulders or wearing as an elegant shawlette.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs lace stitch work as the primary technique, creating an openwork design that forms the distinctive crescent shape and decorative edge. The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic foundation for the shawl. The lace edge features intricate stitch patterns that create the delicate, openwork aesthetic characteristic of fine shawlette design.
Beadwork is incorporated into the lace edge using 88 seed beads (Size 13, 0.85 mm), which are integrated during the knitting process to add dimensional sparkle without overwhelming the piece. A size 13 crochet hook (0.85 mm) is used to assist with bead placement during construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
- Yarn Weight: Fingering weight (4-ply)
- Yardage Required: 400 yards (366 m)
- Recommended Yarn: Fiber Optic Kashmir (80% merino/10% nylon/10% cashmere blend; 420 yards per 114 g), shown in the colorway Blood Moon

Gauge and Sizing Notes
The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 31 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch after blocking. While precise gauge is not critical for this design since fit is not crucial to the shawl's function, variations in gauge will result in size differences and affect the total yardage needed to complete the project. Blocking is recommended to achieve the stated gauge and to fully develop the lace pattern's definition.
Additional Notions
Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires stitch markers (optional but helpful for tracking pattern repeats) and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing the piece.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and bead integration. Familiarity with reading knitting charts, managing yarn overs and decreases, and blocking techniques is beneficial for successful completion.
