Product Description
This is an Ombre Rainbow (OmbRainbow- see what I did there?!) -two strands of yarn are used at the same time so that each colour blends and flows into the next. I have designed it to be easy to follow, so it is beginner friendly and I give you the colour recipe and amounts of yarn you will need. There is a photo tutorial included to help you make the bobble pom poms which are crocheted as you make the blanket and therefore won't shed or fall off. It is a larger, longer version of my Rainbow Drop blanket.
You could substitute with any dk yarn but amounts would need to be adjusted. I have also given a full colour recipe in the pattern.
UK and US terminology versions included in download
OmbRainbow Blanket Crochet Pattern by Melu Crochet
Project Overview
The OmbRainbow Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket pattern designed to showcase a beautiful ombré rainbow color progression. This finished blanket measures 110cm x 92cm (43 x 36 inches), making it an ideal size for a cozy throw or lap blanket. The pattern is written using UK crochet terminology, and the design creates a visually striking gradient effect by transitioning through multiple color bands.
Materials Required
To complete the OmbRainbow Blanket, you will need the following materials:
- Hook: 5.5mm crochet hook
- Yarn Weight: DK weight yarn
- Yarn Brand Used: Hobbii Bamboo Rainbow (substitute with any DK yarn as desired)
- Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends
- Stitch Markers: 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
Yarn Quantities and Color Progression
The pattern uses a carefully calculated ombré rainbow color scheme. The designer used Hobbii Bamboo Rainbow yarn in the following approximate quantities, listed in order of color progression:
- Grey: 31g
- Violet: 50g
- Indigo: 53g
- Blue: 60g
- Green: 67g
- Yellow: 77g
- Orange: 89g
- Red: 95g
- Cream: 86g
The designer notes that yarn amounts may need adjustment if substituting with a different DK weight yarn. A full color recipe is provided within the pattern for additional customization options.
Tension and Sizing
The recommended tension for this pattern is 9 stitches and 7 rows in treble crochet to 10cm/4 inches using a 5.5mm hook, or the size needed to obtain this tension. While the pattern will work if tension is not exactly matched, the finished blanket size may vary accordingly. Adjusting hook size up or down will affect the final dimensions.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The OmbRainbow Blanket incorporates fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The primary stitches used in this pattern include:
- Chain (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the base of the blanket
- Double Crochet (dc): A basic short stitch used throughout the pattern
- Treble Crochet (tr): A taller stitch that forms the main fabric of the blanket and contributes to the overall drape and texture
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds or securing stitches without adding height
- Bobble Stitch (Bpp): A decorative textured stitch created by working multiple yarn overs and loops on the hook simultaneously, then pulling through all loops at once. This stitch adds dimensional interest and visual texture to the design
Stitch Construction Details
The bobble stitch is a key decorative element in this pattern. It is constructed by chaining 6 stitches, then repeating a sequence of yarn over, insert into the third stitch from the hook, yarn over, and pull through (leaving two loops on the hook) five times until six loops are accumulated on the hook. A final yarn over pulls through all loops simultaneously, creating a raised, textured bobble. The pattern then chains 3 and repeats this bobble sequence into the top of the previous bobble stitch, creating a connected bobble texture throughout the blanket.
Pattern Features
This beginner-level pattern is ideal for crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and want to create a visually impressive finished project. The ombré rainbow color progression creates an elegant gradient effect that develops as you work through each color section. The combination of treble crochet and bobble stitches provides both structure and decorative texture, making this blanket suitable as a functional throw or decorative piece.
