Olivia's White Hat by Joan Laws
What Is Being Made
Olivia's White Hat is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed by Joan Laws, available in three sizes to fit babies, toddlers, and children. The hat features a classic construction worked in the round, creating a seamless, comfortable fit. This downloadable PDF pattern is free and suitable for knitters new to hat construction.
Sizes and Finished Measurements
- Baby: 16 inches (40 centimeters) circumference
- Toddler: 18 inches (45 centimeters) circumference
- Child: 20 inches (50 centimeters) circumference
Techniques Used
This hat is worked in the round using circular needles, a fundamental technique for creating seamless knitted garments. The pattern incorporates ribbed edging and stockinette stitch as the primary fabric. Knitters will practice joining for working in rounds, managing stitches across two circular needles when the circumference becomes too tight for a single needle, and decreasing at the crown to shape the top of the hat. Video tutorials are included to guide knitters through the more complex sections, including the transition to two circular needles during the crown decreases.
Stitches Used
- Ribbed Edging: Alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 rib) worked in rounds to create an elastic, fitted band
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The main fabric, created by knitting all stitches in each round to produce a smooth, classic appearance
- Decreases: Used at the crown to gradually reduce stitches and shape the top of the hat
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for Tahki-Stacy Charles Cotton Classic, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn in White (color #3001). This yarn is worked at a worsted weight with yardage of 108 yards per 100 meters. Yarn requirements vary by size: Baby and Toddler sizes each require 1 skein, while the Child size requires 2 skeins. The mercerized cotton fiber creates a breathable, durable hat ideal for warm weather wear.
Needles, Notions, and Gauge
The pattern uses two size US6 (4 millimeter) 16-inch (40 centimeter) circular needles, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. Knitters should have 5 stitch markers on hand to mark pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds. The pattern also includes a large flower clip on barrette as a finishing embellishment.
The required gauge is 20 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, worked in rounds on size US6 needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in a fitted hat.
Pattern Overview
The hat begins with a cast-on of 90, 100, or 110 stitches depending on size. After carefully joining for working in rounds without twisting, knitters work ribbed edging for the first two rounds using alternating knit and purl stitches. The pattern then transitions to stockinette stitch for the main body. As stitches accumulate and become too tight on a single circular needle, knitters divide the stitches between two circular needles to continue working comfortably. The crown is shaped through strategic decreases, with video tutorials provided to guide this transition and ensure a professional finish.
