Not just for Halloween Skully Socks by Jane Burns
What is Being Made
These are knitted socks featuring decorative beaded skull motifs, designed to be worn year-round despite their festive name. The socks are slightly slouchy in construction and available in three sizes to fit shoe sizes 1-4 (Small), 4-7 (Medium), and 8-11 (Large). The design draws inspiration from Mexico's vibrant Day of the Dead celebrations, combining pumpkin-hued coloring with glittering beaded skulls for a touch of Gothic glamour.
Knitting Techniques Used
These socks are worked from the top down, a popular method for sock knitting that allows for easy adjustments and a custom fit. The pattern incorporates bead application using the crochet hook method, which involves using a small crochet hook to thread beads onto the yarn as you knit. This technique creates secure, decorative beaded elements that add visual interest to the finished socks. The pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to move beyond basic projects.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The socks are primarily worked in stocking stitch, the fundamental fabric used in most sock knitting. This creates a smooth, elastic fabric ideal for close-fitting garments. The beaded skull design is integrated into the stocking stitch base, with beads strategically placed to create the decorative motif.
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions
Yarn: The pattern calls for Opal Solid 4ply Sock Yarn in Orange (shade 5181), though any sock yarn of similar weight may be substituted. One 100g ball (425m yardage) is sufficient to complete the project. The recommended yarn is composed of 75% superwash wool and 25% polyamide, providing durability and easy care.
Needles: 2.75mm double pointed needles are required for working the socks in the round, the traditional method for sock construction.
Additional Notions: A 0.75mm crochet hook is needed to thread beads through the yarn during the beading process. One pack of Debbie Abrahams size 8 seed beads in shade 605 (or similar) provides the glittering embellishments for the skull design.
Tension
The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches by 38 rows over 10cm in stocking stitch, which is typical for 4ply sock yarn and helps ensure the socks will fit properly across all three sizes.
Pattern Support
The downloadable PDF includes video links to guide you through the beading technique and sock knitting basics, making this pattern accessible even if you are new to sock construction or the crochet hook beading method.
