Product Description
My Noah baby cardigan has proved so popular that I thought it would be lovely to make it smaller for premature babies too. It's a simple, modern yet timeless knit in my favourite garter stitch. Mismatched buttons add a trendy touch but matching buttons look great too. Despite it's name it looks lovely on baby girlies too and the pattern includes instructions for both.
This is the first of my new premature baby pattern collection which I'm currently working on.
Noah Premature Baby Cardigan by Buzybee
Product Overview
The Noah Premature Baby Cardigan is a thoughtfully designed knitting pattern created for the tiniest newborns. This downloadable PDF pattern offers three premature sizes to accommodate babies weighing 3lbs, 4lbs, and 5lbs, with corresponding finished chest measurements of 12", 13", and 14". The pattern includes instructions for both boy and girl versions, making it a versatile choice for welcoming premature infants into the world.
What Is Being Made
This is a classic button-front cardigan designed specifically for premature babies. The garment features a simple, elegant construction with three buttons for fastening. The cardigan is constructed in three main sections: a back panel, two front panels, and sleeves, all worked in a continuous knit construction method.
Construction Technique
The Noah Cardigan uses a distinctive bottom-up construction method. The knitter begins by casting on stitches for the back and works upward in rows until reaching the shoulder line. At the shoulders, the stitches are divided, and each front panel is then knit downward separately to the bottom edge. Once the front and back are complete, sleeve stitches are picked up at the shoulder line and knit downward to the wrist, creating a seamless integration at the yoke. This technique minimizes seaming and creates a smooth, comfortable fit for delicate premature skin.
Stitches and Abbreviations Used
- G st (Garter Stitch) - The primary stitch throughout the entire cardigan, created by knitting every row. Garter stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with excellent stretch and recovery, ideal for baby garments.
- K (Knit) - The fundamental knit stitch
- Kfb (Knit into front and back) - An increase technique that creates an extra stitch by working into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
- K2tog (Knit two together) - A decrease technique that combines two stitches into one
- PUK (Pick up and knit) - A technique for drawing new yarn through existing stitches along an edge, used for picking up sleeve stitches at the shoulder
- RS (Right side) - The front-facing side of the finished garment
- WS (Wrong side) - The back-facing side of the finished garment
Materials Required
This pattern requires minimal materials, making it an economical choice for premature baby gifts. Knitters will need DK weight yarn in quantities of 50g for the 3lb size, 60g for the 4lb size, or 70g for the 5lb size. A pair of 4mm knitting needles is required to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern calls for three buttons for the front closure and a stitch holder to manage stitches during construction.
Gauge and Tension
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 44 rows in garter stitch over 10 centimeters when worked on 4mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished cardigan fits properly on a premature infant, as even small variations can significantly affect the final measurements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Noah Premature Baby Cardigan is suitable for knitters with some experience. While the garter stitch construction is straightforward, the pattern requires competence with basic shaping techniques including increases and decreases, the ability to manage multiple sections, and skill in picking up stitches. The small scale of the project and the need for precise gauge make it more challenging than a beginner pattern, though it remains accessible to knitters who have completed several projects.
Size Options
Three sizes are provided to accommodate different premature birth weights and measurements. The 3lb size has a finished chest of 12", the 4lb size measures 13" across the chest, and the 5lb size offers a 14" finished chest measurement. Yarn quantities and stitch counts scale proportionally across all three sizes.
