Nemetona Pullover by Linda Marveng
What is Being Made
Nemetona is an advanced-level knitted pullover sweater inspired by Celtic mythology, named after the goddess of sacred places. This designer piece features an asymmetrical silhouette with a longer, curved back hem contrasting against a shorter straight front, creating a distinctive and stylish aesthetic. The pullover is available in six sizes ranging from XS to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 84 cm (33") to 126 cm (49.5").
Design and Cable Work
The sweater showcases an intricate cable-knit design that forms what designer Linda Marveng describes as a "magical cable grove." The pattern incorporates multiple cable techniques including Staghorn cables, Roman cables, and double cables, all framed by a Honeycomb stitch pattern. These decorative cable elements are strategically placed throughout the garment to create visual interest and textural depth. The combination of these traditional knitting techniques demonstrates advanced-level construction and stitch manipulation.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This project employs several advanced knitting techniques suitable for experienced knitters:
- Cable stitches: Staghorn cables, Roman cables, and double cables create the signature textured design elements
- Honeycomb pattern: A decorative stitch used to frame and complement the cable work
- Piece construction: The sweater is knitted in separate pieces rather than in the round, allowing for precise shaping and the asymmetrical front-to-back design
- Curved hem shaping: The back features a curved hem that requires careful increases and decreases for proper fit and drape
- Set-in sleeves: Sleeve cap shaping and armhole construction typical of fitted pullover design
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Nemetona is designed to be knitted using The Fibre Company Cumbria Worsted, a premium yarn weight classification. This worsted-weight yarn provides the structure and definition needed to showcase the intricate cable and honeycomb stitch patterns. The yarn composition includes Merino Wool as a primary fiber, contributing to the sweater's softness, breathability, and elasticity—qualities essential for a fitted cable-knit garment. The worsted weight ensures that the cables remain crisp and well-defined while maintaining comfortable wear.
Finished Measurements and Fit
The pullover features distinctive proportions with varying widths across the front and back. The back bottom width ranges from 53 cm (20.75") in XS to 74 cm (29.25") in 2XL, while the front bottom width is narrower, ranging from 42 cm (16.5") to 63 cm (24.75"). The back length measures 77 cm (29.5"), while the front is shorter at 62 cm (24.5"), creating the characteristic asymmetrical silhouette. Sleeve lengths range from 49 to 51 cm (19.25" to 20"), accommodating various arm proportions across the size range.
