Product Description

The Neck Bolster Pillow is a great little gift for people that have neck pain and need some head support. Both my mom and aunt suffer from this so I designed this for them. It provides support behind their neck without causing claustrophobia as some wrap around pillows can.

Worsted yarn such as Caron Cakes makes a soft pillow.

Neck Bolster Pillow by Cookie's Crochet

What Is Being Made

The Neck Bolster Pillow is a cylindrical crochet cushion designed to provide cervical support and comfort for individuals experiencing neck pain. Unlike wrap-around pillows that can feel restrictive, this bolster offers targeted support behind the neck without causing claustrophobia. The finished pillow measures approximately 12.5 inches long with a circumference of about 12 inches, making it an ideal size for personal use or as a thoughtful gift for someone managing neck discomfort.

Crochet Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly crochet project employs fundamental techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The pattern utilizes basic stitch construction and shaping methods to create the bolster's cylindrical form. The designer notes that gauge is not critical for this project, making it forgiving for beginners who are still developing consistent tension. The pattern incorporates working in rounds and uses back loops only (blo) in certain sections to create specific texture or structure.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) — the foundation stitch used to begin the project
  • Double crochet (dc) — the primary stitch that forms the body of the pillow
  • Double crochet increase (dcinc) — two double crochets worked in one stitch to add width where needed
  • Double crochet decrease (dcdec) — a decrease technique to shape the pillow
  • Slip stitch (slst) — used to join rounds and finish edges

Materials and Construction

This project requires minimal yardage, using less than one skein of worsted weight yarn. The pattern shown features Caron Cakes in the Fairie Cake colorway, though any worsted weight yarn would work well. The bolster is constructed using a US F crochet hook. Beyond yarn, you will need polyester fiberfill (polyfil) for stuffing the finished pillow to provide the necessary support and structure. A yarn needle is required for sewing the ends closed and weaving in any remaining yarn tails.

Pattern Notes

The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout. An important note for crocheters: the chain 2 at the beginning of rounds does not count as the first stitch, and the first stitch of each round should be worked in the same stitch as the chain. This approach helps maintain consistent stitch counts and even shaping. The designer emphasizes that gauge flexibility makes this an accessible project for beginners, allowing for personal interpretation while still achieving a functional finished piece.
