Natka Knit Hat by sochaknits
What Is Being Made
Natka is a downloadable knitting pattern for a fitted knit hat designed by Maria Socha. This intermediate-level project creates a classic head-hugging beanie available in three sizes to fit head circumferences of 56cm, 58cm, and 60cm (22", 22¾", and 23½" respectively). The finished hat heights range from 21cm to 28cm (8¼" to 11"), depending on which size is selected. The pattern is presented as a PDF suitable for personal use and is ideal for knitters seeking a straightforward yet refined hat design.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques that make it suitable for knitters with some experience. The construction uses circular knitting methods, which create seamless fabric in the round. The pattern incorporates mock cable stitch work, adding subtle texture and visual interest to the finished hat. Bobble stitches are also featured, providing decorative dimensional elements. The pattern uses standard decreasing techniques including knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases, which are essential for shaping the crown of the hat as stitches are gradually reduced toward the top.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (Stst) – the primary fabric base, created by alternating knit and purl rows
- Mock cable – a textured stitch that mimics the appearance of cable knitting without the complexity of crossing stitches
- Make bobble (mb) – a decorative stitch that creates small three-dimensional bumps on the fabric surface
- Knit through the back loop (ktbl) – a variation that twists stitches for added texture
- Decreases – including k2tog, ssk, s2kp (slip 2 stitches as if to knit 2 together, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over), and sk2p (slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over) for shaping
Materials and Tools
The Natka pattern requires worsted weight yarn in quantities of 150m, 170m, or 190m (160, 180, or 200 yards) depending on size selection. The sample shown was knitted using Malabrigo Rios in the Lotus colorway. Knitters will need US#6 (4.00mm) circular needles and US#7 (4.50mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles (dpn) for the pattern. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches by 26 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch using the larger needle size. Additional supplies include stitch markers, a tapestry needle or hook for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Pattern Difficulty and Suitability
Classified as an intermediate-level project, Natka is well-suited for knitters who have completed basic hat patterns and are comfortable working in the round with circular needles and double-pointed needles. The combination of mock cable and bobble stitch details, along with crown shaping decreases, provides engaging complexity without overwhelming newer knitters. The three-size range makes this pattern accessible for creating hats for different head sizes within a single downloadable file.
